If we follow Christ, we will encounter the desert, and be tempted by our old ways.

This is exactly what happened to the children of Israel when they left Egypt, and began longing for the life they left behind, even though that life meant slavery to Pharaoh.

The same is true with us: despite the fact that Jesus offers freedom, we often long for the lives of bondage and self-destruction that we leave behind, even though we know they cannot satisfy.
