“The big question for me was, who has the authority to interpret scripture and establish doctrine?”
Paul McCusker, who has spent decades working for Focus on the Family and serving in several ministries, began to ask tough questions about the very nature of Christianity- if Jesus prayed that we would all be one, why were there so many divisions among Christians? If Christians were ever going to be unified, what would be the mechanism for binding them together, since it was obvious that a common faith in Jesus wasn’t enough to heal those divisions? Paul eventually found the answers to his questions in the authority structure that Jesus set up through Peter during his earthly ministry- a structure that still exists today as the Catholic Church.
