Growing up in Kentucky, Deacon Joe Calvert had experience of Baptist, Methodist, and Christian Science congregations, but by the time he got to college, he was pretty sure none of it was true, and was even handing out atheist literature on campus.
He still had a spiritual hunger, though, and was surprised when a mentor who was teaching him Eastern meditation encouraged him to memorize the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.
That was one step in a process that began to open his heart slowly to the realization that Christ loved him, and was calling him to be a part of His body, the Church.
