Sue Neugebauer’s parents were Jews who survived Nazi persecution in Hungary, and had Sue baptized as a baby, not out of personal conviction, but as a matter of self-preservation. During her early years, she wasn’t aware of the significance of her Jewish heritage. As she attended Anglican and Catholic schools growing up, she developed a love of Scripture and liturgy, but didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus until her teens. Eventually, she met some Messianic Jews, and felt a strong connection to their love of the Jewish tradition combined with Christian faith. It was through that community that she also met a Catholic priest, who eventually helped her to see the continuity between Judaism and the Catholic faith.
