John Leyendecker’s parents didn’t raise him in any sort of faith, and when his dad died of a heart attack, John got into lots of trouble at school, eventually dropping out in 7th grade. After a few years of drug and alcohol abuse, John got involved with 12-step recovery programs, and started to become open to faith. When someone invited him to Mass after a 12-step meeting, John was immediately struck by the beauty and truth he experienced there, and he knew he had to become Catholic. He started from the ground up with the Bible and the Catechism, and with the help of the woman who would become his wife, his faith caught fire and he knew he’d arrived at his spiritual home.
