Deacon Joe Calvert had experience of Baptist, Methodist and Christian Science communities growing up, but by the time he got to college, he had decided that Christianity was for the simple minded, and he’d rather throw in his lot with the intellectual atheists that he’d been reading. However, he still felt spiritually empty, and decided to seek out Eastern forms of meditation. Gradually, through that growing spiritual openness and the witness of his wife, Deacon Joe’s misconceptions and prejudices regarding Catholicism began to melt away, and he knew he had to come home to the sacraments.
