God the Artificer – Episode 6

In this episode, Marcus Grodi and Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson begin to dig into Book II of Against Heresies by St. Irenaeus of Lyons.

St. Irenaeus addresses the Gnostic idea that God is so far above creation that we cannot possibly know him, and that those who do know him have have done so through an impartation of secret knowledge. Christianity, on the other hand, understands that God has revealed himself to us not only through Abraham, Moses, David and others, but also in Jesus Christ, the Word Made Flesh through whom all things were created.

As Marcus and Msgr. Steenson discuss, the concept that the God who is over all things could also love us and dwell among us is a revolutionary idea, and one that St. Irenaeus had to reassert against philosophies that saw God as utterly unknowable.
