Fr. Thomas Cavanaugh – Young Life Missionary and Catholic Revert
Fr. Thomas Cavanaugh’s mom was Baptist and his dad Catholic, and so both of those traditions were in the background for him growing up. A poor student (or at least a distracted one), Fr. Cavanaugh didn’t really pay attention much at his Catholic school, and so the faith never really sunk in for him there. However, befriending a devoted Evangelical coworker led him to a personal relationship with Jesus, and eventually to overseas missionary work with Young Life. It was while in Ethiopia serving as a lay missionary that he returned to the sacraments, with the help of a Salesian mission there, and the overwhelming experience of grace in his first adult confession spurred him on to follow a vocation to the priesthood.
