The average Christian may not regularly consider the matter of authority. He knows what he believes and where it comes from, or at least he thinks he does.

Introduction

He may assume he knows what the Bible says or what his denomination has always believed or even what God wants him to do. Yet, not all Christians agree on what the Bible says. And not all members of a denomination agree, or there wouldn’t be so many splintered denominations. And certainly all Christians don’t agree on what God wants—it’s rare to find even two Christians who agree on this! Here in lies the question, or should I say, problem of authority: when there are two or more opinions on what the Bible say, or what a denomination believes, or what God wants—or what is true or false, right or wrong—how are we to decide? What is the trustworthy authority to which we can turn to help us know what is true? In this section, we hope to address this question.
