I notice that it is possible to send a private message to a forum participant - in reply to a post. Where do these messages go? Is the recipient alerted to them? How are they accessed?

When you're at the forum home page, you'll see a message at the top that says, "Logged in as Ruthie - No new messages [Logout]"
If you have private messages waiting, it will say "1 new message" or "2 new messages" etc. Click on that link and it will take you to your Inbox.
Users are alerted to the presence of new messages by this notice, and also by email if you have your profile configured for notification.

In the upper right hand corner of your forum lobby window is a message showing you “logged in as So-and-so.” Following this is a bold face report on your Private Message (PM) in-box. It shows whether you have unread mail. This is the user’s notification when he has a message waiting. Clicking on the message (regardless of whether a message is waiting) links you to your PM area.
Within the PM area, which can be seen only by you, is a central listing area similar to a forum thread area. To the left is a series of buttons to access messages received, messages sent, and messages deleted. (Message deletions are handled in two stages: deleted from the in- or out-box but maintained separately in the database, and gone forever if they are deleted from the “deleted” area.)
There are buttons on top of the message received/sent list to allow you to work with the messages: move, delete, new message, reply, etc.
You send a PM to another forum participant from within the PM area by clicking on New or Reply. You enter the participant’s user name, the topic and the message. Multiple recipients can be designated, separating them with a comma.
You can also send a new message to a specific participant by clicking on his name (either in a thread or in the membership list). This accesses a list of actions, among which is Send Message To. Selecting Send Message To takes you to the PM area and sets up your message box, ready for input.
PMs are seen only by sender and recipient(s). No one else has access to them.
Clear as mud?

Help! I notice in my private mailbox, that often, after I have read a personal email, the notice of new mail remains. Sometimes it acknowledges that I have read my mail and will show that no new mail exists but often a message will remain showing unread until I delete the whole thing.
Am I missing something?:?

It is a documented bug in the forum software. Try logging out, then resetting the cookie, then log back in again. If it persists, try logging in from a different computer or use a different browser. And if all else fails, delete the message. You can retrieve it from Deleted Messages after if necessary.

I've had to delete before. It doesn't make any difference whether I log off my work computer and then back or or come home and do the same on my mac. t still stays up. No big deal, but just wondered why.
