I've been having horrible troubles for awhile loading this board off and on [mostly on] for awhile (couple weeks?). Also CHN itself. I normally use Firefox, but atm I'm on IE and it's working fine... but firefox worked fine for awhile last ngiht, too. It's really cut down on my posting and stuff because pages simpyl failed to laod. Today i discovered that I could usually get apage to laod which wouldn't if I clicked on the link to usually laod if I entered the URL directly, linkless. Then I switched to IE 'cause that still really sucks. Anyone else with this issue? [I despise IE, so this is no real fix.]

Unfortunately, saying that a page won't load is like saying your car won't start.  Is the battery dead?  Did you lose the keys?  Are you out of gas?  Did your car get totalled by an 18 wheeler?  Did you drive it off a cliff?

See my point?  Can you give any more specific information?

You probably need to clear our your cache and temporary files on your computer.  CCleaner does an excellent job, BUT if you leave it at its default settings it will delete all stored cookies, passwords, etc.  Go through the options before you let it scan, and clear the checkmarks for cookies and any other specific areas you don't want to have deleted.

Hey Rick- in my experience the problem has been intermittent- after clearing the cookies, caches etc. I still find that in my case ( I work off of 2 computers) sometimes IE won't work but fire fox will, sometimes neither will. Sometimes the email notification links work, sometimes they don't. You can try 3 times in an hour and not get in and then things will work fine for days. Not too specific I realize but it is like a car making weird noises- as soon as you get ot the garage the darn thing is working well:cool:

But a good, thorough housecleaning (clearing temporary Internet files, clearing the recycle bin, deleting appropriate cookies, etc., etc., sometimes two or three times, tends to fix the problem on a more permanent basis.

Although I did have to actually uninstall Firefox and physically delete all the residue to get it to start working again at one point, and that's not something the typical user can do.

An upgrade to the forum software is approaching, and hopefully it will correct some of these problems if CHNI chooses to make the upgrade.  Most of the remaining problems are the result of our web host upgrading their platform, but I no longer have access to deal with that, so it's in staff hands these days.

Kim's issues sound like mine - given that I already have Firefox set up to clear all Temporary Net files and all that crap - except cookiees - constantly, I dont' tihnk it's on my end.

A sad, recurring tale. I have no expertise in this area, to know what to do.

I keep reporting, however, that I was unable to use Firefox and switched exclusively to IE months ago. Except for the very bad period some weeks ago when it was slow as molasses, it's been relatively smooth lately. That may help others, too. Several people, however, have reported the opposite scenario.

But in any event, it is clearly a problem on the server's end.

Unless there is some major overhaul, all we can do is try different browsers. I use IE here, but Firefox for all my other online work and browsing.

Macintosh user here. I use three browsers regularly: OmniWeb, Safari and Camino. (The first two are WebKit based, the third Mozilla.) My recent experience is that any of them will work well on the forum under most circumstances.

If there is an occasional problem — slowdown, error messages or whatever — the WebKit browsers usually go down, while Camino continues working sluggishly. I can clear the caches (Internet related and Fonts, usually) with Onyx (a free system utility out of France, downloadable from VersionTracker or MacUpdate), and things are instantly back to normal.

My experience with several additional browsers (DevonAgent, Firefox, Opera) shows similar behavior. The German-made browser iCab has been given a major overhaul recently and may be worth a try. One I haven’t tried is Sunrise, which is geeky but highly rated. I’ve looked at others (Flock, Shiira), but they seem too flaky for regular use.

That’s 10 browsers, eight of which will probably work satisfactorily on the forum. The important thing for reliability and performance is to clear the caches; since the server problem was repaired, I usually find a monthly routine to be sufficient. Otherwise it’s clear sailing.

David
