Hi, I'm new here and I guess I have to post to keep my membership, so here it goes. I'm a junior English major at a small state school.
I was heavily involved in Intervarsity for 2 years until I made a small miistake, and no one would forgive me for it. I lost most of my friends b/c of that. Needing something else to cling to, I went back to the ELCA stuff I was brought up with. Got a job at an ELCA summer camp, wasn't ready for it, got depressed and suicidal, quit in the middle of the summer to go home and get help. Came back to school for the fall semester, avoided church because I didn't know any other Lutherans to go to church with and I felt I had severely let down the ELCA by quitting the week before the busiest week of the summer.
I have a friend across the hall from me (yes I still live in the dorms) who was elected president of Catholic Newman Community this year. Overheard her discussing with various cohorts plans for Newman meetings, and debated going. Began going to Simple Supper (free food sponsered by CNC) and met nice people, including the campus minister. She kept on me about going to CNC, and eventually, one night I did. It was a "Know your Faith" night pretty soon after those conterversial letters of Mother Teresa's were released, so the night's subject was Mother Teresa. Our priest is a lover of knowledge (as am I), and he was so knowledgeable about so much stuff. I loved it.
I went to Simple Supper this last week, and found out CNC was having another "Know your Faith" night. So I decided to hang around the church and do HW until CNC. Little did I know but there was a "reconcilation" service that night. Being a ridiculously small church, there was no where to go, so I ended up attending the service with a couple friends. Even though I really had no idea what was going on, I got this overwhelming feeling of peace, which I don't get often cause I struggle with anxiety. Then I went to CNC and got to ask Father any question I wanted. I got up the courage to ask one of my friends to meet me before mass this morning and go with me. She used to be protestant too, but found CNC etc to better minister to her needs. I am finding the same thing. I really enjoyed the service, even though I couldn't take communion and didn't know half the stuff people were reciting from memory. I still have a lot of questions about stuff though, and being a seeker of knowledge, got excited when I found this site. So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it, however long it may be. God Bless, Laura
P.S. Who decided that the Catholic Lord's Prayer should be four lines shorter than the Lutheran Lord's Prayer? Isn't it the same prayer? I kinda got excited when the service finally hit something I could recite from memory. Only problem was I kept going and they didn't...

Laura,
Welcome to the Forum! We're glad to have you join us! We're a huge family here and we'll always be here when you have questions or concerns.
What is Intervarsity? I've never heard of it before.
About the Lord's Prayer--the doxology is not in the Bible. I do not know how or when it was added. Someone more knowledgable can answer that. But I do know that the "Protestant ending" was added later. When I first became Catholic it was hard for me to leave off the "end" of the prayer. Now when I attend a Protestant Church service I think people look at my funny when I stop before the doxology.

Yes, the doxology was added sometime later during some of the translations.
You will notice, though, that it is included in the Mass, it's just interrupted by a prayer in between the "Our Father" and the doxolgy or "For thine is the kingdom."
The prayer in between goes:
"Deliver us, O Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In Your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we await with joyful hope the coming of Our Savior, Jesus Christ."

Laura, your question about the Lord’s Prayer is a fairly common one. Here is one of the replies that have already appeared on the forum: Click here.
I’ll also mention that there are several people your age on the forum. There’s even a special youth area if you would feel more comfortable posting there. Otherwise, browse around and make yourself comfortable. There’s lots of knowledge here.

Welcome Laura!!!
It's great to have you on board, hope you stick around. From your post, it pears to me that you might be interested in Quo Vadis, it's the young adult/youth organization under The Coming Home Network. Quo Vadis is dedicated to helping young people on their journey into the Catholic Church. It provides fellowship and support through ways such as a website http://www.quovadisyouth.org, a facebook group (you can add me as a friend and I'll invite you), monthly e-newsletters that explain about Catholic doctrine (our upcoming one is on the Eucharist), a forum on this board (see CHN youth forum), we also can pair young adults who are interested in the Catholic Church with those who are Catholics to help answer and questions they have about religion and such, we are additionally looking to start weekly or biweekly chats soon.
Anyway, just thought I'd let you know in case you're interested
God bless you and again, welcome to the forum!

Hi, Laura, we're glad you joined us. Hopefully you'll stick around and fellowship with us, and maybe even learn a little about the Catholic faith!!

Maybe the better question would be who decided the Lutheran version should be four lines longer?
Historically, the doxology at the end (For thine is the kingdom...) is considered a "gloss", that is, something added in transcription and not part of the original. The Lord's Prayer has been recited with and without the doxology by various churches in various times and places.
It's sort of like the Ten Commandments. Some faiths combine the first two, like the Catholics, and some combine the last two into a single command against coveting. Neither is wrong; they are just different traditions.

Hi, Laura,
It's great to have you here! We can always use another English major.
