Dh said he wanted to buy me one for our wedding
Of course, no place IRL close to me has any that I can pick up and ~feel~. Where are some good places online to look?? What is a good material for one to be made of? I would like it to have a heavy feel and be sturdy. KWIM? I've bought Q a couple off the 'net and they didn't last long. The picture looked good online, but once we received them, they just weren't made well. So what should I look for, and where should I look?

I am not even Catholic, so take this with a grain of salt:
I would look online for rosaries made by nuns. If anyone knows how they should be made with good materials, etc, it is them! lol

Have you checked EWTN's on-line religious catalogue? You can link it off the EWTN website. They have many, many rosaries in all price ranges. Obviously, if you are looking for quality, you will want to spend more than $10. Sally Poore

I got my whole collection from this place:
http://www.autom.com/
check out the one with the 8mm hematite beads. very hefty. smooth beads.
the description says "glass" but it is hematite (an oxide of iron)
their prices are reasonable, just watch out for the ones that are available only as multiples!

Silly question from a non Catholic: Are rosaries unisex, or are there styles which are more masculine?

There are preferences in style. I tend to avoid the pink ones. Functionally there is no difference.

Actually, I have been looking at those just now! On ebay, there are lots of different kinds, and some are being touted as antiques. A lot of the wooden ones are made from olive wood, and are French or Italian. I think it would be really neat to have someone's old rosary from that long ago, especially if they were a religious.

I bought a "special one" for "my Easter" from:
http://www.deluxe-rosaries.com
Otherwise, a Google search will bring up several suppliers of rosaries, including a couple sites that sell supplies for people who want to make their own.

The son of a friend of mine - protestants, they are - took a tour of Europe over the Summer. I half-jokingly asked him to pick up a rosary for me when he went to the Vatican.
I really needed a rosary - I lost one, and washed another one too many times and it fell apart.
The one he brought back was, well, about as masculine as you can get. Black wood beads, string rope instead of bead chain. It is rather big and bulky - I wonder if it was made for wall decoration. The red-wood cross is roughly carved. A pewter corpus and a pewter INRI sign is glued on.
Just researched the medallian that is inlaid. It is of St. Benedict. Two medallions - one behind the head of the corpus, the other in the centerpiece.
-------
Check out different rosaries. There are some made of fragrant woods.Last edited on Wed Nov 28th, 2007 09:52 pm by MitchyMitch

Well, so far I found EWTN to be the best laid out in terms of shopping and presentation. I found one I liked, until I read "perfect gift for a man" LOL I'm not a frilly person
I like the John Paul II papel crucifix best, but would prefer one with Mary or the Holy Spirit as the centerpiece.
What I'm really starting to wish is that dh would have just picked one out for me {sigh} Picky, huh?

God's peace. I run the rosary club at my high school and teach the kids how to make them, as well as make them myself for gifts, so I might be able to help you if you want to make one yourself.
Rosaries are not hard to make--it's a great craft, and very relaxing, like crocheting or knitting. I have a strong preference for smooth rather than faceted or angular beads, as these slip through the fingers easily. I also prefer that the "pater" beads that separate the decades be spaced differently from the "ave" beads and have a different size or shape (and sometimes a different appearance or material). Semiprecious stones or shell make great beads and can be readily purchased at Michaels and Hobby Lobby stores. I also like to use old restored sterling silver centerpieces and crucifixes for chained rosaries.
Of course, if you need one for a Christmas gift (=right now), you'll have to go through eBay or a catalogue. There are many great rosary buys on eBay from estate sales. Remember that if you buy a rosary it will need a new blessing! Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~

I have wondered about that because the prayer Father said over my rosaries seemed so personal, even naming me in his prayer. In fact, a couple of times (I must have 8 or 10 rosaries.) I have wondered if he was blessing me instead of the rosary. Thanks for the info.

I like the guys rosaries best, I am not a pinky type person. the guy ones usually have dark colored wooden beads, perfect for praying in the woods! there are some that glow in the dark, perfect for helping you find your way back to your campsite.

| My favorite rosary is a blue agate beaded bracelet rosary. I never take it off ever. The lady who owns our Catholic bookstore makes them. The good thing about a bracelet is that it's always with you at a moment's notice, you don't have to go looking for it.

I have bought several things from this company. They have several categories of rosaries, including price categories.
Try this website.
One of my mentors advised me to choose one with capped beads for the Our Fathers since your fingers can detect them without benefit of the eyes.
I chose garnet because it's close to the look of the high-quality wooden or onyx beads, but more feminine.
I also chose one with at least two metal links, not just one, between the beads. It's worth the price difference for feel, flexibility, and durability.

I love the rosary! Full stop!
But it was not always so. Sure, I prayed it, but I really didn’t feel its power untill I wanted to stop smoking.
I had smoked over 3 packs a day for over 30 years. I had never, ever tried to quit.
My reason for wanting to quit was also not an acute heath problem; I just got “sick” of focusing my life on a cigarette.
Last year I decided to really give something up for lent. Smoking!
How to do it? I put it before the blessed Mother, and put out my last cigarette at midnight on Fat Tuesday.
After that, every time I wanted to smoke, I pulled my Rosary out and prayed or just held it. In the evenings it was tough watching TV and not smoking, so I started making Rosarys! Believe me, you can’t smoke, pray and knot a Rosary at the same time.
Within one year I had made over 50 Rosarys, which I give away (including instructions ), for free!
Moral of the story? Make your own, and your relationship to it will be much different than “Store Bought”

I hope I don't end up double-posting... the post I just wrote seemed to have been eaten by the internet demons. No surprise there, demons hate the rosary.
Any rosary will do and if you wish to get a free one just google "free Rosary" and you wll find a dozen+ websites where you can get one. Same for scapulars. Ditto for miraculous metals.
The rosary I pray on is made of black nylon cord and dark wooden beads. It cost $2.50 at the Cathedral Book Store in Columbus, OH. I didn't like the wooden cross with a sticker of Jesus on it, so I bought a metal crucifix designed after the papal staff to attach to it instead for $1.39. Total? $3.00 with the tax.
What matters isn't what it looks like - it is that it is prayed. I have used a single decade "rosary ring" in years past that I found while helping to sort through the boxes of books a deceased priest left to an organization I worked for. I never met Fr. Earl, but always thought of him when I felt the ring in my pocket. I hope he smiles down on me from heaven.
If you aren't looking for a particular style but just wish to have a rosary to pray, go to your local Catholic parish and ask the priest "who is the rosary lady here?" It sounds funny but dollars to donuts he will point her out. Every parish has one, a kindly apostle of the Rosary committed to making them and giving them away. In many places you can find an anonymous saint has left them in the book rack "free to those who will pray them".
Remember, a cheap pink plastic rosary that you actually use to pray is worth more in heaven than a rosary of gold and jewels that is left untouched.
My dad taught me to keep one in my pocket at all times... when you feel it waiting in line at the grocery store, at the bank, walking down the street, it is your little hint to say some Aves and talk to God. I don't leave home without mine. I have started out the door and turned around to go get it when I realize it isn't on me.
If you can't find anyone that makes them or any place that sells them, email me with your address, and I will send you a wooden one like the kind I have. Matter of fact, I will throw in a scapular at no extra charge.

There is a minor problem with the forum software that sometimes facilitates double posting. The simplest solution is to edit one of the messages to read "double post" or "please delete" or something like that, and the moderators will delete it when we see it. When I see two identical posts, I will automatically delete the first one, since the second is more likely to have been edited. Of course, if one indicates that it was edited, I'll leave that one and delete the other.

Thanks for sharing your story, Robert. I appriciate it! And I think you have inspired me to make this our Lent devotion. We like to do a family thing, in addition to our own, and I think having the kids an dh string a Rosary while I read in the evening would be a wonderful way to fill their busy hands.
Cool.

If you are in need of "a rosary" (anything will do, mind you) you could likely inquire at any Catholic parish and you will invariably find an old lady who makes them even if just out of plastic beads and strings. The physical rosary is just a tool - what matters are that one prays the prayers. For a few months before returning to the practice of the faith I simply used a single decade chaplet. I used to own a small metal ring with ten "bumps" on it that I found sorting through the library of a deceased priest - Fr. Earl. I never met the man, but always remembered him when praying the rosary on Fr. Earl's "rosary ring".
Google Free Rosary to find one if you like. A lot of us are so committed to the spread of this devotion that we are happy to make them for anyone who wants them, so long as they will be prayed!
Worse comes to worse, and you cannot find one, just email me and I will mail you one at no charge.
As I said, it doesn't matter if the beads are pink plastic. A cheap rosary that is prayed is worth far more than one made of gold left untouched.
Simple
Thank you so much for this offer! How generous of you
My dh ended up buying me one after all.
We both worked his past Saturday. Our goal was to meet at church @ 4:30, then walk to the Christmas parade my dd was in with her Irish Step dancing troupe. Church is two blocks from my work, so I don't go home. Except I have an hour between work and church. So I though I would get some quick shopping in first. Only problem is I ran out of gas a half mile from the shopping area. I had to walk to Walmart to call dh. He was *not* a happy camper. I mean, he was reall PO'd at me :?
We did not have a nice evening. I felt guilty for thinking bad thoughts of him at church (for being so upset with me, lol), I was cold during the parade, and when we went to dinner with my dad & stepmom afterward the food was bad and the service worse.
By the time we got home at 10:30 (after waiting for AAA to bring us gas, and fighting freezing rain on the way home) I was ready for bed. Especially since I still had to get back up for work @ 6 the next morning.
But he had something to show me. He stopped at a little religious store on his way home and surprised me with a Nativity set {heart melting} and also told me he bought me a Rosary for our wedding.
So, long story short, he's a keeper and I don't need to buy a Roasary for myself now. But I am thinking of giving one to my sponsor. I think the links in this thread need added to the recomended resouce forum. Lots of good information and links here!
Thanks so much!!!
Ali
