February 14th is the feast of St. Valentine, a priest and possibly a bishop in Rome.  He was imprisoned for giving aid to martyrs in prison, where he is said to have performed a miraculous healing, and was himself martyred for the faith by being beheaded in 269.

Valentine himself is not associated with romance, but his feast day may have been used to "baptize" a pagan custom.

You can read more about St. Valentine at Catholic Forum or at New Advent.

Valentine's Day, like Christmas, Mardi Gras, Easter, and Halloween, are commercialized versions of what was originally a Catholic religious feast.

It seems like every time I turn around I find out more about how much of our current lives, public holidays, public customs, etc. come from the early days of the Church! :)
