Patrick was born between 387-390 in Scotland named Maewyn Succat, a pagan name which means "Warlike."  His baptismal name was "Patricus."  At age 16 he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave, where he spent six years in the mountains as a shepherd, where he spent his time in prayer.  He had a dream in which he was commanded to return to Britain; seeing it as a sign, he escaped to the British Isles and studied in several monasteries, where he became a priest and later a bishop.

Pope Saint Celestine sent him to evangelize England and then Ireland, during which Saint Odran was his chariot driver and Saint Jarlath one of his students.  In 33 years he converted Ireland, which later during the Middle Ages became known as the Land of the Saints.  Patrick died in his beloved Ireland between 461-464.

As a result of Patrick's evangelization, Irish monasteries became repositories of great learning, which helped to maintain civilization in western Europe during the Dark Ages.

The following is taken from his Confessions:

I came to the Irish people to preach the Gospel and endure the taunts of unbelievers, putting up with reproaches about my earthly pilgrimage, suffering many persecutions, even bondage, and losing my birthright of freedom for the benefit of others.

If I am worthy, I am ready also to give up my life, without hesitation and most willingly, for Christ's name. I want to spend myself for that country, even in death, if the Lord should grant me this favor.

It is among that people that I want to wait for the promise made by him, who assuredly never tells a lie. He makes this promise in the Gospel: "They shall come from the east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." This is our faith: believers are to come from the whole world.

Erin go Bragh, Criff and everyone. I hope all remembered to wear the Green today!

While we're at it, let's not forget to pray for the Church in Ireland!

God's Blessings!
