This one's awfully painful. I never knew the man, but like so many guys my age and interested in public affairs and reporting, Russert was one of us. And he was only 2 years older, at 58.

Perhaps what seems more poignantly cruel is the timing of his passing, just before Father's Day because Russert made no bones about the importance of the relationship of fathers and their children, esp. fathers and sons. The same year I'd become any kind of professional writer was the same year I became a father for the first time.

Raised in a solid Irish Catholic home, his upbringings showed throughout his entire career. This meant he put his matrimonial calling before his career.

I just want to leave you with a portion from a New Yorker article I found a few minutes ago; and with that another quick observation as to how his approach could be applied by some of us, including myself, when posting on this forum which can be read by people from all over the world in a flash of an eyebrow.

russert: When do you think life begins?
gore: I favor the Roe vs. Wade approach, but let me just say, Tim, I did—
russert: Which is what? When does life begin?
gore: Let me just say, I did change my position on the issue of federal funding and I changed it because I came to understand more from women—women think about this differently than men.
russert: But you were calling fetuses innocent human life, and now you don’t believe life begins at conception. I’m just trying to find out, when do you believe life begins?
gore: Well, look, the Roe vs. Wade decision proposes an answer to that question—
russert: Which is?

I thought about posting the rest of the interview Nicholas Lehman referred to. However, I think it's best to let the writer's own words describe it best. Hopefully some of us will keep in mind Russert's gentlemanly legacy when we face the temptation to go all out. I know I did this morning in another posting. While I have no regrets for my thoughts, maybe I could've done it with less obvious wrath and more understanding. In a more sporting way.

Hey, how would Tim have handled it?

Please remember to pray for his wife Maureen, son Luke and all his colleagues.

Tim was a heck of a reporter. The funny thing was that everyone knew where he stood religiously when there is all this hooplah about reporters leaving their affiliations at the door.

I'm just learning today that he was a devout Catholic.  I praise God for his witness to the world.

I always felt a close connection with Tim as my own family were blue collar Catholic ethnics from the Buffalo - Niagara Falls area, the only difference being we were Polish while he was Irish. I will miss him. He was a gentleman. We were blessed to have him with us.

I, too, was very sorry to learn of Tim Russert's death and mourn his loss to our nation. Although I did not always agree with him, I always found his work to be very interesting and am pleased to learn that he was a Christian.  During the last of May, Tim Russert was the graduation speaker at Randolph Macon College in nearby Ashland, Virginia. He also received an honorary doctorate degree.  I never would have imagined it was one of his last public speaking engagements.  May God keep Tim Russert's precious soul in His eternal care!  May God grant his family and friends peace that passes understanding.  :praying:

Tim Russert was a great man indeed. I was very saddened and shocked to learn of his passing, and watched a great deal of the tribute programming that has been on over the last three days. He represented journalism at its very best. Let's hope his legacy of "hard-hitting, truth-seeking congeniality" will be emulated and thus live on.
