Vatican City, May 19, 2008 / 09:21 am (CNA).- Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, has sent a letter to the bishops of the world with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI reaffirming the norms established by the Congregation for Catholic Education in the 2005 document, “Instruction Concerning the Criteria for the Discernment of Vocation with regard to Persons with Homosexual Tendencies in view of their Admission to the Seminary and to Holy Orders,” as universal and without exceptions.

In the brief “Rescriptum ex audientia” –a written response to various queries—Cardinal Bertone said the norms establishing the selection of candidates to the priesthood are valid “for all houses of formation for the priesthood, including those under the Dicasteries for Eastern Churches, for the Evangelization of Peoples, and for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.”

The letter, which Cardinal Bertone said was issued in response “to numerous requests for clarification,” implies that the prohibition against accepting homosexual candidates in seminaries applies not only to diocesan seminaries but also to those of religious orders and congregations, as well as to those that are located in mission territories.

The 2005 Instruction indicated the Congregation for Catholic Education, “in accord with the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, believes it necessary to state clearly that the Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practise homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called 'gay culture'."

"Such persons, in fact, find themselves in a situation that gravely hinders them from relating correctly to men and women. One must in no way overlook the negative consequences that can derive from the ordination of persons with deep-seated homosexual tendencies," the 2005 document also said.

I would like to add to the above that the Vatican document did not prohibit the ordination of those men with a homosexual orientation but rather those with "deep-seated homosexual tendencies".

In my opinion, those who engage in sexual behavior, read pornography, engage in sexual relationships, date, etc., should be barred from ordination regardless of whether they are gay or straight.   That, I believe, is the thrust of the document.   I don't believe it holds homosexual men to any higher standard than would be expected of heterosexual men.

:embarrassed:Some libs upside-down/sideways/downside-up/crossways both ways attempts to get around what"Roma locuta est" about homosexuals, especially the more, should I expressedly say, dangerously active kind, might want to remember that old Lorie Morgan song, "What part of no don't you understand." :eyeroll:

How many Paul Shanleys, John Geoghans, et al, do we have to take in and inflict back on otherwise trusting Catholics, not to mention eventually disgusted Catholics who are sick and tired of paying the legal bills those bums left us holding the bag for? :headbang:

No is !

             No is no!

                                No is no!

That's three strikes: over here most Catholic American males know what that means. Most liberals do, too. But there are a bunch of them ... hell, they'll never get the message unless, God forbid, one of their kids or loved ones gets the Shanley or Geoghan "treatment."

The Tradition has  condemned homosexual behavior from the beginning, There is certainly no place for "active" homosexuals in the clergy. The magisterium could not have issued any other kind of statement.

Rick I understand what you mean but, according the article even those who support the so called "gay culture" are not admitted to the priesthood. So, does it mean that the article goes farther than the Vatican document or I miss something?

Peace

The part about candidates for holy orders who promote or approve of “the so-called gay culture” is in the original Vatican document. Rick simply did not speak to this point.

I suppose if you read a story about a bunch of Catholic seminarians marching in a "Gay Pride" parade in Texas they still didn't get the message from Rome and/or they must be crazy as hell! :roflmho:

At first I was little confused, but your comment, Rick, helped me to make more sense of it.

I think the term 'homosexual tendencies' can be equivocated sometimes.  Does it simply mean a homosexual orientation or the tendency to act upon homosexual desires?  I think Rick's comment helps clarify that.

So to clarify, is it true that a known homosexual can be allowed into the priesthood so long as he is not actively pursuing a homosexual lifestyle or endorsing or speaking for the gay culture? The article really does not sem entirely clear as some statements in it seem to imply that gay men are simply prohibited from seminary. Then later there is a quote about it being homosexual behavior. But the first quote does not seem to say there is any alternative unless a person who would be considered homosexual is actually not really a homosexual unless acting on his/her feelings. But Rick seems to say that the issue is not whether they are gay by preference or not so much as the lifestyle they lead that makes the difference, and that a gay man can become a priest so long as he is held to the same standard or chastity.

"implies that the prohibition against accepting homosexual candidates in seminaries"

"cannot admit to the seminary those who practise homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called 'gay culture"

A person who experiences homosexual attraction but can live and embrace a celibte lifestyle appropriate to the priesthood can be admitted to seminary, during which time he will be expected to be celibate.  Should he be accepted for ordination, he will then take a vow of celibacy and will be expected to commit to a celibate life.

This is exactly the same standard to which heterosexual men are held.  It is not the "attraction" that is forbidden, but the practice.

In my opinion, "deep-seated homosexual tendencies" and "homosexual lifestlye" would include such things as frequenting bars and places where homosexual people congregte.  The same would be expected of a homosexual man, who would be expected to avoid strip clubs, etc.
