Pastor John Hagee surrendered to Bill Donohue of the Catholic  League yesterday (and as of tonight, while the two men are talking on CNN's Situation Room".) Hagee, notorious for calling Catholicism an "apostate church," and the "Whore of Babylon" met more than his match in Bill Donohue. :woohoo:

So, yesterday he sent a letter off to Donohue and there goeth, or droppeth, one of the last bastions of buffoonery on two feet. Read all about it from Hagee's own typewriter and hand:

http://www.catholicleague.org/images/upload/image_200805130112.Donohue051208.pdf

He really folded his cards (thankfully) and perhaps just in time, since the Vatican's chief astronomer said we could believe in the existence of aliens. One could only imagine how a formerly unchastened Hagee or another pastor thinking like he used to would use this little nugget of news to whip up more fears of what that great ol'whore could be up to next.

Of course, we still have Tim LaHaye and his side-kick Phil Jenkins to beam some sense into. 'Course now I'm talking about the Dark Side...a very profitable "Dark Side." :roflmho::roflol:

This is a major turn around for Pastor Hagee and I praise God for it. I just finished Carl Olsen's book "Will Catholics Be Left Behind" and now better appreciate the heresies involved in the theology behind Hagee's interpretation of the end times.

If Pastor Hagee is willing to make an apology and admit he was wrong in some ways about the catholic church, let's be kind and show him he is doing the right thing with his about-face.  Who knows what it took for him to do that!  Praise God

When Bro. Hagee sits down and really reads some of the truth written in recent history books on the Inquisition and truth of what happened, then perhaps I'll believe the man has turned a new leaf. Politics does strange things to the uninformed.

Off to Oregon...see ya'll in a couple of weeks.

Not Phil Jenkins ... he's a good guy: http://www.beliefnet.com/story/128/story_12800_1.html

You mean Jerry Jenkins ... and even he isn't as strident as LaHaye.

Marsha, you are correct. The tendency to gloat is strong but that is not what we are about.

I am also very wary of the "new books" on the Inquisition which smack very much of revisionist history. We are also not supposed to be in the business of glossing over the bad things which happened in history. The Jews of Cologne are watching us in their white martyrs robes.

I don't believe it is ever appropriate to impugn a person's motive without evidence, although the political situation makes it tempting to do.

As Pastor Hagee holds influence over many Christian people, I find his tempering of his comments and his reach toward ecumenical dialogue encouraging.

Peace,

Ruth

Moonshadow, you're right about THAT Jenkins. My apologies.

Ah yes, Philip Jenkins, he's the person who really foresaw the problems that are truly besetting our separated Anglican brethern. As for Jerry Jenkins, yes, he's not as firm as LaHaye, but as long as his name's on that series of books, and they've sold quite well, turning that literary ship around is going to take a lot of work from above. Don't hold your breath, though!

But thanks again for pointing out my goof!

Perhaps I've been a bit tough on Hagee, but he's played tough in his own version of hard-ball sectarian politics and thrown quit a few spitters at us. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and certainly Bill Donohue the same and much credit for turning Hagee around.

I just hope Hagee makes it stick. (No doubt I'm sure the GOP really hopes he makes it stick. But that's their problem, not mine.)

Moonshadow, you're right. We don't have to impugn anyone, and it really is a nice treat to see your posts getting read.

We really don't have to impugn the celeb preachers, jocks, pols, tycoons, generals, boob toob "personalities," and so forth. They make our job a lot easier just by doing what they do, being human. They just do it on a grander scale and on a bigger stage, and sometimes for a much grander pay scale!

I've gotta admit to this one human touch of mine, being a former member of the ancient order of paper "journalists" (reporters, reporters, reporters, I hate that pretentious word "journalist" and the word "accountability" that's all too often used by pols who try to impress people who like to call themselves "journalists" instead of that more nobler term: Reporter)--that I like to load up some ammo in my computer good with old fashioned "cannister" shot. Sure makes for an interesting day afterwards. :D

Well, pretty soon I have to do some "human rights research" so I can present a case before our old hometown's (Amherst) human rights committee to demonstrate that killing the jobs of a handful of school cafeteria workers ("lunch ladies") isn't exactly the most socially just thing the town could be doing, esp. just to save a mere $150,000. At least the Washington, NJ precendent will go in our favor. I just have a hard and embarrassing time envisioning a very liberal college town like Amherst pulling this stunt. But, "accountable" minded-only people seeking reelection on the backs of the less powerful will always find ways to find other easy victims in order to prove they can, like Benito of olden days, prove they can make the trains still run on time.

I don't know who's going to need prayers the most on this, the local human rights committee listening to me, my emb- :embarrassed:'ed wife if I blow it, the "lunch ladies" who are counting on me, or the people I'd like to put through the wringer for putting those women through a most uncalled and undignified wringer, just to save a few bucks--and believe me, in this day and age, this isn't big money, even for college towns. Not when they want to use the "savings" to turn around and (for lack of a better term) go out and buy two new pencil-pushing glorified babysitters.

You might get additional ammo from Truthseeker.  She works in a school cafeteria too, although in Ca.  Very best of help from above on this cause you have taken up.

Thanks and God Bless ya!

Yes :D

I didn't mean that you were.  It was MY temptation to do so when I read the letter.  I have been worried about John McCain's association with Mr. Hagee.  But I'll TRY to keep a charitable attitude (now you know why I have to pray SO MUCH *hah*).

Pax,

Ruth

:) Annie, I'm glad I just caught your post. For some reason I drew a blank page.

This is all I could get for now. What I don't understand is how I was able to see the doggone thing before, with Hagee's signature on it, no less. This, however, came directly from the Catholic League Don't bother clicking the button below. (s) :waving: (I BET he regrets offending us, big time regret!)

HAGEE REGRETS OFFENDING CATHOLICS; CONTROVERSY ENDS

May 13, 2008

Pastor John Hagee sent a letter today [click here] to Catholic League president Bill Donohue that effectively ends the dispute the two men have had. Donohue comments as follows:

“After weeks of meeting with various Catholic leaders, and accessing scholarly literature on Catholic-Jewish relations, Pastor John Hagee has demonstrated an improved understanding of the Catholic Church and its history. In his letter to me, Hagee says, ‘I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful.’ He specifically cites his emphasis of ‘the darkest chapters in the history of Catholic and Protestant relations with the Jews,’ and has pledged to provide a more complete and balanced portrayal going forward that will not reinforce mischaracterizations of the Catholic Church. And while he stresses that his invocation of terms like ‘apostate church’ and the ‘great whore’ were never meant by him to describe the Catholic Church, he acknowledges that anti-Catholics have long employed such language.

“The tone of Hagee’s letter is sincere. He wants reconciliation and he has achieved it. Indeed, the Catholic League welcomes his apology. What Hagee has done takes courage and quite frankly I never expected him to demonstrate such sensitivity to our concerns. But he has done just that. Now Catholics, along with Jews, can work with Pastor Hagee in making interfaith relations stronger than

:) This outta finish this thread out with a "happy ending."

John Hagee pulled his endorsement of McCain for president.

"Read all abou it" -- This is taken from a Catholic League press statement released yesterday.

May 22, 2008

Pastor John Hagee has pulled his endorsement of Republican presidential candidate John McCain; McCain subsequently renounced Hagee’s endorsement. Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented on this development today:

“One week ago today, I met with Pastor Hagee in my office. I found him to be sincere, apologetic and friendly. I also found him to be the strongest Christian defender of Israel I have ever met, and that is why attempts to portray him as anything but a genuine friend to Jews—one for whom the Holocaust is the horror of horrors—is despicable.

“Hagee’s decision to sever all ties to McCain is noble: He knows he has become a liability to McCain, even after he has made amends to Catholics. What this proves is that Hagee, unlike Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is not an egocentric man. He is also not like the partisans at the Interfaith Alliance which today called on McCain to reject Hagee: when it was founded, the Interfaith Alliance received $25,000 in seed money from none other than the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“Pastor Hagee can now move in the religious circles he has become accustomed to, and continue his ministry without distraction.”

Nothing like dropping a BIG HUGE HINT to Obama to shake Wright off like a bad nightmare -- which he'd be to any candidate.

Let's just give thanks that Hagee's "seen the light" about Catholicism and I'm sure a lot of Republicans must be thankful as well. :waving:
