An unbelieving friend sent me a link to an LA Times article entitled Religion beat became a test of faith: A reporter looks at how the stories he covered affected him and his spiritual journey.

It has been picked up on all the secular, and athiest blogs and etc.

It made me sad that he "claimed" that he was going to enter the church, but did not because of the sex abuse scandals.

It strikes me of the logic of evaluating the truth of the church by the people IN the church.

I am sure there are wiser persons than I subscribed to this forum that can do a better job of deconstructing his argument, and I would be eager to read those thoughts for my own personal enlightenment.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, when churches claim that accepting Jesus, or however they want to put it, changes your life forever, people interpret that as meaning that Christians behave better than other people all the time. People tend to be absolutists by nature.:?

In fact, most people I know, both in the churches and out, do not believe that the Church is a place of healing for sinners but a social club for "better" people. This is sad.:(

This whole issue means it is up to each one of us to demonstrate saltiness and light wherever and whenever we can.

Various scandals in the churches through the ages have been a real problem but also have helped separate those who are serious about their faith from those who cut and run at even the slightest difficulty. Witness me trying to deal single-handedly with an entire abusive parish. We do what we can and then move on. But, we do what we can.

This article makes me think of a few quotes from well known men in history.

"The greatest argument against the Catholicism is Catholics."

G.K. Chesterton

"I might be a Christian if I ever knew one."

Nietche, whose famous quote is: "God is dead."

"I like Christ.  I don't like Christians very much.  They do not act like Christ."

Ghandi, I saw this on a bumper sticker just today.

"When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

I think we all know who said this.

May the Lord have mercy on us.

Darlene
