Peter's Pence Brings in $100 Million
VATICAN CITY, JULY 4, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The traditional Peter's Pence collection brought in more than $100 million last year (€74.8 million).

The Peter's Pence fund collects donations from the faithful for the works of charity of the Roman Pontiff.

The Council of Cardinals for the Study of Organizational and Economic Questions of the Apostolic See met in the Vatican on Monday and released the numbers in a statement.

The statement says that the cardinals reviewed the "progress of Peter's Pence, made up of the collection of offers on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul from particular Churches, institutes of consecrated life, foundations and individual members of the faithful."

In 2006, the statement explains, "the offerings totaled $101,900,192.71 (€74.857.979), which the Holy Father has directed to the needs of his ministry at the service of the universal Church."

Peter's Pence offerings notably grew last year. In 2005, the collection brought in some $59.4 million.

I am curious-in my old church I once mentioned to one of the vestry members that I had designated my offering that week towards a special project that they were trying get funds for- I was critized and told that I should have given my usual  and given extra to the specail fund. I can't do that on our budget. My new parish gave me envelopes and for each month there is in addtion to the "sacrificial offering" one others with desginations on them for the school, the building fund, the a/c etc. I break up my offering amongst each of these envelopes. i am assuming that since that since they are included each month that my parish would not have a problem with this as my old one did.

Hi Kim,

Actually, the Catholic Church doesn't really expect a set amount of monetary offering, so you can do whatever you wish. One of the Precepts of the Church is to support the Church so we are expected to do something. However this doesn't translate into a set amount.

If you decide you can monetarily tithe [or more!], then one could take that amount and divide among any parish funds you wish [building fund, Easter flowers, regular offering, etc]. Not only do parish offerings count but there's also other good works that can be included such as a Catholic mission in Haiti or South America, EWTN, or even the Coming Home Network. I'd venture to say that one should always include support of the Diocese/parish, so don't overlook Diocesan funds for outreach or seminary training.

For those that really can't spare the cash, there is always volunteer work - for years I was living in subsidized housing as an impoverished single parent. My contribution was singing in the choir where I was asked to do solo work. Later years found me in the Legion of Mary visiting the nursing home and leading the singing after a rosary.

There are innumerable methods of 'giving'. Reviewing the works of mercy can give you ideas. Giving money is a great way to support the Church, but there are other ways as well.

My understanding of "giving" to the Church is very broad. We are expected to give appropriate to our state in life.

If you do a search for "stewardship" you'll find that we've had extensive discussions about this topic from a Catholic perspective.  Stewardship includes time, talent, and treasure, and as Catholics we're expected to give as we can of all three.
