Hi, all. My name is Sally. I am a new member in the forum. Actually, I had joined up several years ago (before I came home to the Church !) but stopped posting after awhile and lost touch. I just returned from the 5th annual Coming Home conference in Columbus, OH. It was simply grand! All speakers gave outstanding talks. I learned so very much about both Protestantism and Catholicsm in America from the 1600s up till the Revolution. I would highly recommend ordering the conference DVD through the Network when it is available. Going to the conference motivated me to check out the Coming Home network again. I noted on the postings here that several others of you were also at the conference. What were your experiences? Nice to "meet" all of you! Sally

GREAT! me too!!!!
WHAT DID YOU LEARN? WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST?
I loved meeting people and brainstorming with them about how to help Catholics grow in faith. I loved skimming the books at the vendor tables (I could live in a library). I loved taking notes at the talks. I loved feeling INCLUDED.
The widow's British law in Maryland (forced taking kids of Catholics to be raised by protestants) was sad, interesting, and surprising. I had thought that Maryland was a safe haven for Catholics as a "catholic colony", but that is not true. I look forward to being able to review the papers online. I did take a lot of notes.
Divine Appointments: I did not meet every person there, but I made great connections. Ironically (I thought), I met many cradle Catholics. It was nice to feel welcomed by "cradles"there too. At home, it is weird to be invited to prayer meetings, but to be excluded from the Catholic employment field. At home, it's as if I am not Catholic ENOUGH for folks. Strange since I feel "more Catholic" than many cradles seem to be.
My RCIA "part two" was taking notes of homilies, continuing to research Catholic Theology and reviewing the COMPANION to the CCC which includes the Bible passages and other SOURCES of the CCC entries. I guess I need a different name for "RCIA part three": continuing Catholic apologetics.
Future: it would be nice to be taken seriously by other Catholics, and to have my previous ministry experience also taken seriously while seeking Catholic employment. It still hurts when I look at my resume and think that I could be hired by many other ecclesial bodies, but my coming "HOME" church still thinks of me as a needy kid (or what, I am not sure). Try to discuss this in secular therapy. Ha ha. I usually end up trying to "convert" the therapist. How ironic that the Irani Moslem counselor attended Midnight Mass at my church (where her kids go to school). I gave her a Bible in Farsi to give to her mother (reportedly Christian), and pray she will read it too.
Helped me too: being surrounded by people who are in CHNI helped me get the visual reality that I am not alone.
STILL TIME TO TRUST GOD FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE PATH. He is The One Who got me this far, so He will continue to lead me and provide divine appointments (grace?) for me. Marcus Grodi mentioned the good stats of folks in the primary group finding fruitful, gainful employment in only a few years after Catholic confirmation.
Testimonies: It was great to hear live testimonies of journeys. It was really great to meet people in person! It was emotional event for me including tears and joy. Also the enemy (the one who goes to hte pit) tried to stick sad thoughts in my head that maybe I should not be here, but thanks to meeting the people and taking notes (habit for me, even at Mass), I became comfortable.
Helped me too: being surrounded by people who are in CHNI helped me get the visual reality that I am not alone.
It was cool to hear Alex Jones preach in his bold style. It showed that we can still keep being ourselves while being Catholic. We can keep having the boldness for evangelism of the martyrs. So, I can continue to be a "Word of Faith" charismatic Catholic, and quote Scriptures from Catholic translations of The Scriptures.
Blessings to all, and Go Fish for Christians for The Lord!

FWIW, I am a cradle Catholic, a graduate of a Catholic high school, with certification from a Catholic university. and I still couldn't find a Catholic ministry job!

Kathy and Sally,
I'm glad you both had a great time! Who did you enjoy listening to the most? Did you like Monsigner Swetland?

Kathy & Kayla,
Thanks for responding to my comments on Deep in History, Deep in Scripture conference. All the speakers were excellent, Kayla. I learned a whole lot! I'll summarize in a separate post.
Kathy, I share some of your sentiments. I was received into the Church at Easter Vigil, 2005. It is hard to find a place to fit in (outside of Mass). I suppose that is what motivated me to attend the conference and also to start posting on this forum. It seems that I'm just overflowing with enthusiasm and joy at my new faith, and I want to study and learn and share it with others, but very few want to listen. So, it was good to go to the conference and see other persons who are just as excited as I am. My husband and younger son came into the Church with me, and that is very awesome of course, but my husband is quiet and keeps to himself. He came to the conference with me and he said it was "10 times better" than he expected, but he doesn't like to meet and greet new people very much, so we didn't buy the meal plan or attend any of the socials. Due to this, I didn't get to meet anyone and that was kind of sad, but I had to consider my husband's needs, too. I'm glad, Kathy, that you got to meet some folks.
I've been enrolled in the Distance Learning program at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Originally, I had thought I was going to earn a 2nd Masters (I'm a speech therapist) in theology and go teach in a Catholic high school or something. Alas, as I've looked a bit more into this, I think I'm chasing a pipe dream. There just aren't that many jobs out there, and from what you say in your post, Kathy, the jobs that are available are darn hard to come buy. You sounded frustrated, and I'm heading into the same place as you, I think. I guess I've decided that I'm going to keep taking classes at Franciscan just for my own benefit and as a way of praising God in my own way--not with the idea of securing any kind of paying job in the Catholic education system. But, I can't afford to pay for the full Master's degree courseload (not to mention all the time it takes to study, write papers, etc.) and not have any hope of being employed. The classes are great. I would highly recommend Franciscan's Distance Learning program for anyone who just wants to learn more about Catholic Christianity.
Nice to read both of your comments, Kayla & Kathy. Thanks.
Sally

SHALOM! Sally, I think I saw your nametag on you in the crowd. Don't worry. When I figured out that it would take TEN HOURS for 600 folks to talk for ONE minute each, then I figured that I would not be able to meet everyone there. I learned that from two priests that they do not use the forums because they are too busy at work. Well, that's what I get for being "retired", more time to not schedule right. heehee.
Rick: Thanks for the reminder about the job thing. Marcus Grodi gave us hopeful good news that most of the clergy converts are working in lay apostolate ministries within (three-five?, forgot) years of making the big change.
I must remember that The Lord gave me many signs and words to lead me to be Catholic. Even though I have a Master of Divinity, and studied RCIA-type things for two years, and got confirmed, I still get attacked with doubts. Even at the conference, I'm sure it was an attack of the enemy when I heard in my head: how come you are not a pastor? Well, I know God has a plan for everyone, including me (remind me). AND: The Church teaches that you must believe The Holy Scriptures and The Church Teaching (thankfully, now printed in the Catechism of The Catholic Church published by Pope John Paul 2 and Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now-pope).
The papers (including bibliographies) will be published on the Deep in History conference site next month.
Interesting data: I thought Maryland was called a "Catholic Colony", but as British subjects had abusive laws against Catholics. This included the widow's law: children of Catholic widows were taken from them and given to Anti-Catholic protestants to be raised. The list of martyrs who died in North and South America is so LONG that one of the books on the topic is 2-inches thick.
