Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone out there who can give me info. about lay missionaries.
I am a new Catholic that has been preparing to be a missionary for over 11 years. I'm all too familiar with protestant Missions, but now that i'm Catholic, I don't know where to go for information. We plan to move to the middle east(istanbul).
Is there anything missions related that is Dominican? The reason I ask is because a few months ago, I was praying for middle east/and lost souls. I didn't "see" with my eyes, but with my spirit, St. Dominic on my right side and Mary was in front of me, and Mary gave St. Dominic "permission" to put a sword in my heart for the lost. I know that sounds weird but it happened. Anyway, I don't know much about St. Dominic, and am wondering what his connection is to missions.
Thanks
Peace be with you
Rosa

For some years, St. Dominic, a Spaniard, was engaged in combatting the gnostic Albigensian heresy in southern France and northern Italy.
Yes, Rosa, there are Catholic organizations in many countries that promote lay apostolates of various types. This forum, for instance, is owned by a lay apostolate. However, throughout the middle east, you will probably find any evangelization efforts blocked by the Muslim Sharia laws. As a result, it is generally considered expedient to limit missionary activity to non-sectarian humanitarian work. Fortunately, this is something most lay Catholics can handle.

St. Dominic Savio is the one who came to mind when I read your post. Associated with them are the Salesian missionaires. They spend time working with children and areas that are underprivileged as we have here in Birmingham.

Also, another one is the Francisan Friars of the Rewal,

There are so many ways to do volunteer work, it just depends on where the Lord calls you. I know our Church works with Habitat for Humity, and numerous charities in town. The Catholic has so many ways of doing mission work, i just googled catholic missionaries and to see what I would find. I don't know anything about them, but here is one site http://www.glenmary.org/

So it just takes some searching to find the right one.

Sound like God is calling you to be a Third Order Dominican!
Of course they have missions and support lay apostolates.
But you might have to write then for information on the US missions.
Look for the original Catholic branches of the Order of Preachers (there are some Anglican branches now)
