Written to friends about my recent silent retreat --

As Oswald Chambers would say, Father was poured out wine for us.
Within a 44-hour period he offered:

--three Masses, each with a homily

--five presentations, each followed by Q & A

--confession and spiritual direction for every participant

The silence, the absolute serenity and peace, the beauty of the woodland pathways, the geese on the lake, the quest for holiness evident in each face (nuns and retreatants), the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit, the high quality counsel and admonition from Father, the cocoon of love, the chanting of the Psalms by those soft soprano voices--

I did not want to leave St. Joseph's Monastery and the Passionist Nuns.  Big tears were rolling down my face for about thirty minutes after I drove away.

It was like a near-death experience (as persons describe them).
I was pretty much in heaven there, then was forced to return to earth with its noise, confusion, strife, tawdriness, vulgarity, blasphemy, and godlessness. Dear Lord, how hard it was to return to the world again, but the cross must be carried in this life a while longer.

Here's the website.
If you're not careful, you will miss some great links.
Not every link is on every page.

NEXT button will be in far bottom right corner.
Be sure to read the priest's homily and other readings.

Annie, the voices still haunt me (beautiful haunting :)

The Mother Superior is a talented musician.  She plays the organ and directs the singing.

The most amazing thing was the level of interior stillness that I was able to find.  The place is bathed in the prayer of contemplative nuns.  They pray, by name, for all retreatants present at a given time.

You mean quiet?  Like no one talking to you?  As in no one demanding food or drinks or fighting in the background?  No kids hanging off of you (bless their hearts!)?  That kind of quiet?

Oh, my!  Sign me up!!!

I'm glad you had such a wonderful time.

I don't remember anything in Latin.  They sing the Psalms in LOTH.

I mean twenty adults sat together in a dining hall without chatting, just listening to very quiet meditative music.  Cells did not work in the building.  No chatting in hallways.  Freedom to join the nuns for Mass, LOTH, morning prayer, evening prayer.  Two adoration chapels.  Private woodland pathways with benches and swings along the way.As in no one demanding food or drinks or fighting in the background?  No kids hanging off of you (bless their hearts!)?  That kind of quiet?
No kids, no nagging, no phone, no TV, no---    Before I went, I watched mainly EWTN.   Since my return, I usually forget to turn on the TV.   The silence has become like exquisite music.I'm glad you had such a wonderful time.

Thanks, Ali.  I can't wait to go back.  In fact, I am still pondering what to make of my reaction to the whole experience.  That interior stillness surpassed even the deep peace I always have after Adoration.

How I would love to go there, Phoebe.  What part of Kentucky is that, and what is the nearest airport?

It's not too far from Owensboro.   The website URL has a link for Directions.   There is also a link for Upcoming Retreats.  I went as part of a group led by a priest.  They also allow persons to come without a planned program, either alone or as a small group.  It would be a perfect place to go to sort things out.

Aw, I was in Owensboro the summer before last.  I wish I had known such a place was around, I would have loved to visit!

The Passionist Nuns of Saint Joseph's Monastery in Whitesville, Kentucky, have begun a blog. I encourage you to visit it. Even better, I encourage you to plan a retreat there.

Click here for In the Shadow of His Wings.
