The World, the Flesh and the Devil

Dear Forum,

I have heard this terminology used in both Protestant and Catholic circles as the root causes of sin.
Please comment if this term and it’s application in your faith walk.
Not being Catholic, I would like to hear it from the Catholic perspective, although all views are welcome.

Thanks,
dan

I certainly agree.  When we turn to the world, the flesh, and/or the devil we are destined to sin.  It is only when we keep our sights on the Divine Holy Trinity, our Savior, our Blessed Mother, and all of God's friends who surround the throne like clouds of endless praise that we can avoid sin.  I don't know that this phrase would concisely summarize all of Catholic teaching on the causes of sin, but it certainly does not contradict them.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta is a prime example of someone who kept her focus on Christ even while she lived and worked in the world, and even though she spent more than 50 years without feeling God's presence in her life.  She was in the world, exposed to the flesh, and no doubt endlessly tempted by the devil, and yet she lived a holy life that all of us would do well to emulate.
