Greetings to you all in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I've been catching up on the posts here and thought I would add one.  Several times lately I have been awakened in the middle of the night, 2:30 AM or such. Usually I have come to being very alert, not at all groggy, and a few times, I had a strong sense of fear.  Not so much that I was afraid, but that something fearful was present.  And so I prayed.  I pray for myself and for others who I then think about who may be in need.

It has been my practice for years to call upon and especially to call aloud the name of Jesus.  There are plenty of scriptures about the power and authority that resides in His name.  Many of the church fathers have written and taught that simply saying "Jesus'" is all the prayer we need at times.

One night when the fear element was so palpable, I played a CD of Pope John Paul II reciting the rosary in Latin.  I prayed along with it, and then started it over and let it play as I went to sleep.

This made me think of some, such as St. Pio, who have spoken of the rosary as a weapon.  In the spiritual combat that we face, it certainly is! Paul wrote, and others, that we are dealing with a battle that is not against flesh and blood.  Indeed, and what is at stake are the souls of us all.

I'm a total believer in the Rosary.  I keep one handy almost everywhere I am!  There's one in my purse, one next to my tv-watching-chair, and one in my night stand!

I also have had times I awakened at night in fear.  Before I discovered the Rosary, I would recite the 23rd Psalm.  Now I pray either the Rosary or the Divine Mercy Chaplet.  I really like the idea of the Rosary on CD.  I think Mother Angelica has one on EWTN Shopping, I need to order it.

I, too, use the rosary against Satan. The Latin CD of JPII reciting the rosary is just wonderful. I also like singing the Hail Holy Queen at the end. It made me learn the Latin too.

You wrote, "It made me learn the Latin."  This is a good point also. When I was in High School I took Latin, and it has stayed with me, sort of in the background.  Now I really appreciate the sense of history, which is one of the things I like about the Catholic Church.

While not wanting to go back to the "Old Mass," it is interesting to attend one occasionally. I especially think it is good for us to use some Latin prayers or responses in the mass we use each week. Unfortunately, it is like the incense, some people always complain.

Pax vobiscum

Monte

That is exactly what our Holy Father has called for so far.

Unfortunately, it is like the incense, some people always complain.
Recently we had a service where the altar server brought out the censer and when our pastor opened the incense boat, it was empty, and no one had lit the charcoal.  He went through the motions anyway, "symbolically" incensing the Book of the Gospels.  People immediately started coughing and choking, and we got several complaints after mass about how strong the incense was!

I probably shouldn't say anything here, but that rarely stops me.

I have perfume and cosmetic allergies, and if the scent happens to be one that I’m sensitive to, I can double over unable to breathe when someone wearing it comes through the door of the room I’m in.   Even if no-one else can smell it at all.

So maybe, just maybe, those folks who coughed and complained had a real reason to do so.

I certainly hope not!  ;)

So maybe, just maybe, those folks who coughed and complained had a real reason to do so.
In this particular case, they didn't.  Mass had been going on for half an hour and there was no smoke and no incense.  Father was literally waving an empty thurible.

A couple of weeks later in a different setting, incense was burning during mass but not in the thurible, so no one could see it, and several of the same people commented on how good the church smelled.  (Our church is elevated off the ground, and an animal died under the church.  We burned the incense to help remove the odor from the church.  Same charcoal, same incense, same smoke, same odor.  No thurible, no complaints.)

We do have a woman who regularly attends mass at our church who is highly allergic to perfumes, incense, etc.  She sits in the vestibule away from the rest of the congregation, and a minister brings her communion.  She is not one of the ones who complains, and she does not cough and choke.  The incense is not strong enough to bother her.  It is very mild.

So while I do understand that some people may have literal problems, I am absolutely certain it is not the case in this instance.  There was simply nothing there to cause an allergic reaction.

I am a believer in the power of the Rosary.  When my wife and I converted, we were nominal Catholics at the time, we began praying the Rosary together.  But, within a month, we both decided to quit, independently of each other.  We both just quietly stopped.

I decided to quit because whenever I prayed the Rosary with my wife, I would see things in my head which were horrible and blasphemous.   I was too ashamed to tell my wife.

Unbeknownst to me, my wife was having the same problem.

A few weeks later, I came across a book entitled, the Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis de Montfort.  In it, St. Louis explained how Satan would become enraged when people began to pray the Rosary and would frequently send these visions to dissuade them from doing so.  St. Louis advice was to persevere and the visions would subside.

At the same time, my wife spoke to a close friend, a Protestant, about the problem.  The dear lady said that it sounded like Satan was trying to keep her from praying.

So, I told my wife I was ready to pray the Rosary again and I told her what I had been going through and about the book I read and she revealed to me that she had the same experience and about what her friend had said.

We've been praying the Rosary ever since.

Oh, Ruthie, if your reading this, my wife told me about another experience.  Frequently, she prays in the car since she carries the children here and there (we homeschool).  One day, about ten years ago, she decided she would stop praying in the car because she wasn't concentrating on her prayers.  She put the Rosary aside and immediately a tire came out of nowhere and hit the car on the hood.   It scared her and the children half to death.  It did about $1000 worth of damage to the car but everyone was uninjured.  We never found out where the tire came from and when we went to look for it, it was gone.  Needless to say, my wife picked up the Rosary and continues to pray in the car wherever we go.

Sincerely,

Juan

"Smells & Bells" this is what many people like about Catholic worship, when we can get it.  When I was still a Baptist, I read about the incense and candles in the heavenly throne room or court.  If it is a part of worship in the immediate presence of God, why not here and now?  I understand that there is worship taking place in even the simplest prayers. Still, I was so thrilled when I arrived at the basilica in St. Louis on Palm Sunday a few years ago. (I was driving a truck and traveling all over the country.) Archbishop Burke lead us into the Mass with a robed choir, all the servers, incense, palms of course, music in Latin, I was transported!

What a great way to remind ourselves that the Mass is something special.  When we want to go out, most of us put on cologne or perfume, it has a place.
