i have been doing a lot of thinking lately about redemptive suffering, which is a new concept for me. I have had many health problems in life and am growing increasingly disabled with arthritis in my spine, etc. (I am comical putting on my socks!)
I have heard about our sufferings being joined with Christ's in a sort of completion process and have found an apostolic letter on this subject by JPII at the Vatican web site.
Does anyone have any insights for a newbie about how to adjust the prayer life to help with this idea of our suffering being joined with others and with Christ for the good of other people?
Any references, Biblical or otherwise would be helpful, as I am the studying kind.
finally done putting on my socks,

Hi,
It is wonderful that you are thinking of offering your sufferings to fill up that which is lacking in the body of Christ:
Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:
This website has a great explanation:

Annie:
Here is a great book:
Making Sense Out of Suffering, by Peter Kreeft.
It may be available through the EWTN catalog or from Ignatius Press.
God's Blessings

I'm sorry you're hurting so badly. I have had much emotional suffering these past years. Uniting to Christ doesn't make it funner, but it does give it meaning, which makes is somewhat bearable.
Love, Laura

Thank you, James and Laura. God bless you.
Yes, I think life is maybe not so "fun" most of the time but we are having the most fun when we are doing for others so if I can turn these illnesses to the good I will have done my part. And now I have a stomach ulcer, believe it or not. Oh well, we should eat lightly during Lent anyway.
taking my purple pill,
