I have been doing lawn care for the past several years, self proprieter of a small buisiness. I have been less than honest w/the IRS on my earnings, I have paid taxes, but probably far less than what I should have, I don't think I could've made it had I. One of the reasons I have chosen to look for other work, I have not yet filled this year, and have not decided if I will at all, I did not keep very good records of my earnings. As far as the band goes, none of us pay taxes on that, we get paid in cash at the end of the night. I have been given the option if I so desire to stay in Ohio to merge my buisiness w/another, this other guy pays no taxes at all on his lawn care earnings, he is an engineer w/NASA and makes over $100,000 at that job, yea, I'm not sure why he's cutting grass either! If I choose to do this I think I will have to insist we go totally legit, as for making restitution to the IRS, I have neither the funds to do it, or the knowledge of what I owe. Am I in a state of mortal sin in this situation?

I suppose committing tax fraud is considered stealing. It is a felony at both the state and federal levels. Talk to a tax attorney about what to do.

The best way to find out is to take it to the confessional.

I am understanding that your turning to God is really wholehearted, and that you are getting to the root of the matter in a number of areas. Frequent reception of the sacraments will help you stay on target.

You’re pretty small potatoes as far as the IRS is concerned. Given the state of your records, they may accept a “conscience payment” of whatever you can reasonably afford as payment in full. It can’t hurt to ask.

I am certain that David is right about that.

I'm pretty small potatoes as far as anyone is concerned! :D

I was thinking more along the lines of where Christ was talking of being faithful in the small things, and if that applied w/this issue.

Not to Jesus.

I didn't mean it that way Rick, I hear ya though.

Not only am I small potatoes to them, I've never recieved a W-2 statement from any of my customers, they hardly know I exist, but God is aware!

Then it will have to be over a period of some time, I simply don't have the money, or a job at the moment.

Candlemas,

May God bless you for your desire to rectify your life.  I believe you are at a stage of getting your life back on track both spiritually and financially.  Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.

I would resolve to be straight with the IRA from this point onwards, then as you stabilize yourself - you can worry about rectifying the past (I would qualify that by saying you should take this to confession and see what kind of rectification your confessor asks of you).

While you probably should have been paying more taxes, it is likely too that the IRS would probably have been refunding a good bit of it back to you.  So who knows what you really owe.

I would recommend a good sense of humor about this - don't beat yourself up over it.  And don't destroy yourself financially attempting to make up for what you did.

Best!

Oh, I have better reasons for doing that!

I meant to say, "be straight with the IRS..."  Of course, you should always try to stay on the right side of the Irish Republican Army as well ....:P

I see this subject is months old, but I would have liked to suggest finding someone who is an accountant or may charge on a sliding scale and they can help you estimate roughly what you would have owed the past year, and you can try to file for extension or make payments on it, or maybe pay some of it and claim the rest next year. A good accountant probably could help you. Also remember regarding the band to keep records of all the equipment you buy and miles you drive as these things can be written off your gross income.
I do think that you should try to be more precise in all your earnings and take the steps toward complete payments in the future.

Brian

I get paid cash in the band, we don't claim anything from that income. What we pay out in equipment, gas and promotion won't even cover what we make, it's more of a hobby.

Candlemass:

My husband is a musician (horn player -- trumpet & saxaphone).  He spends way more than he ever makes.  He's always buying gadgets for those horns, and horns themselves are not cheap (he has several).

You may not actually have "made" a lot from your lawn business either, after expenses are subtracted (gasoline, travel, depreciation of equipment, etc.).

The challenge in being self-employed is in the record keeping.  When you keep all the records and have a good accountant, you sometimes find out that you lost money instead of making money.

I salute you on your willingness to examine your conscience and your desire to be faithful in small things.

Peace to you!

Ruth
