How do Mass Intentions work?  Are there prayers that can be prayed to help him through purgatory?  What else can be done?

Thank you...

Jill

Our sympathy, Jill.  It's hard to lose anyone close.  Thank God that you are closer to him than ever through the Communion of Saints.

Any prayer can be offered for him.  The mass and the rosary are particularly effective.  Simply mention your intention before the beginning of the mass/rosary and think about him during the mass/rosary, and the benefits you gain will accrue to him.  If for some reason he should no longer need them, God will use them where they are most beneficial.

Growing up, the nuns taught us to say a "Hail Mary" whenever we heard a siren or saw a funeral procession.  We still see people here pulled over on the shoulder of the road as a funeral procession passes, saying prayers for the deceased.

As for "formal" mass intentions just contact the parish and let them know you want a mass offered in his memory.  There is a small stipend ($3.00 in my diocese) to help cover the secretary's time in recording it, putting it in the bulletin, etc.  The charge hasn't gone up since the 50's, so it's not exactly a profit-making racket.  Mass is particularly effective on the anniversary of death.  You'll note that the feast of a saint is most often the date of death, or more accurately the entry into eternal life.

And you can pray to him as well.  His prayers are efficacious for you as well.  You are sad, but remember that your sadness is for the hole in your own heart.  "Weep not for me but for yourselves and for your children."

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.  May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen.

We have a book on a table in the back of the church were people write the names of the people they want remembered during the Mass. The names of the sick, the deceased, those for whom we want prayers such as non-believers or those with problems. When the gifts are brought forward, that book is also brought forward, and placed on the alter. Those whose names are in that book are included in the prayers of the Mass.

Jill -

Because the faithful don't stop being a member of the Body after death, we can, along with our prayers, "offer up" our daily circumstances in union with Christ for these intentions, -

Colossians 1: 24 "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church,
.."
