Hi all,

I have a book that has all 265 popes from St. Peter to John Paul, and I was wondering- some have the name St in front of the names and some have Blessed in front of the names. Is there a diffrence and if so what?

There are three steps to the process of canonization, the official declaration that a person is a saint and worthy of devotion:

Servant of God:  The cause has completed its diocesan phase and been accepted by the Vatican for further study.  The cause for Archbishop Fulton Sheen and John Paul II are at this stage.

Beatification:  At least one miracle has been accepted on behalf of the newly beatified saint, or he is recognized as being a martyr for the faith, called a person of heroic virtue.  The title "Blessed" (abbreviated "Bl") is granted to him.  Masses may be said in his honor, churches may be named after him, etc.  Bl. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) is at this stage in the process.

Saint:  An additional miracle is recognized and the person is recognized as being in God's presence.  St. Pius X has reached this status.

Some causes never proceed beyond the initial step, or beyond beatification.  For example, in order for a cause to proceed from beatification to sainthood, someone must be looking for miracles and actively investigating them.  For this reason, those proclaimed saints are most often clergy or members of religious orders simply because there is an organization actively "working" the cause.
