Okay, I can't remember which symbols go with which Gospel writer...  Most particularly, I'm wondering which one is the lion.

We had my grandmother's funeral today and she was buried in a beautiful little garden that is surrounded by statues of the four Gospel writers.  She is right beneath the one with the lion, which I am tempted to say is St. John, but I honestly can't remember.

OFF TOPIC ALERT!  Kayla how is your eye?  Are the stitches still in?

The burial site for your grandmother sounds lovely.  Most of the cemetaries here are barren looking places.  I like the old ones with the headstones and statues.  I'm glad you were able to get home for the funeral and take a break from school too.  Let Mom and Dad spoil you a little, it's good for them!

My eye is doing much better- I can actually see!  It's not longer swollen shut, but it is still a bit swollen.  I have an appointment to get the stitches out this Thursday, so hopefully they'll be able to tell me what was going on with it.  I'm thinking I must've been allergic to the shot they gave me or something.

The burial site is nice.  Nothing like the old cemetaries (especially the one back at my school)-  there are no headstones, but the statues are very pretty.  And it is up on the top of a large hill over-looking the city of Portland, so the view is very beautiful.

Which hill? I have relatives buried in Lincoln Memorial on Mt. Scott and another in the mausoleum at Riverview Abbey in the west hills. Both places overlook the city.

I am not sure; it is above St. Johns in Portland.  The cemetery is called Skyline, if I remember correctly.

OK, I’ve located it on the Google map, Kayla. Skyline Memorial Gardens is a relatively new cemetery (built after I left Portland in 1974) located on Skyline Blvd. between Cornell Rd. and Germantown Rd. Nice area, relatively untouched by the bustle of the city.

Riverview Abbey Mausoleum, where my grandfather is interred, is on Taylors Ferry Rd. off Macadam near the Sellwood Bridge.

Willamette National and Lincoln Memorial, where an uncle and a brother are buried, are on Mt. Scott, near Milwaukie and Happy Valley. (My brother, 4 years younger than I, died in Vietnam at age 20. He was a Marine.)

A point of curiosity: I also looked at Washington Park, in the hills just west of downtown Portland, and noted that the park roads still bear the names I used for them unofficially back in 1970, when I was working for the city as a traffic engineer. It just happened that officials in the Parks Dept. liked the names and made them official: Lewis and Clark Circle (that circles the Lewis and Clark monument at the end of Park Place), Sacajawea Blvd. (named for the statue of the Indian woman Sacajawea, who guided the L&C expedition much of the way, situated at the west end of L&C Circle), Rose Garden Blvd. (that passes in front of the International Rose Test Gardens) and Sherwood Blvd. (that goes by the archery range/soccer field).
