I was reading a web site that listed the "Dogmas of the Catholic Church" and under the section of "Christian Angelology" it mentions that "Every one of the faithful has his own special guardian angel from baptism." Does that include those of us who were baptized "in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit" but are not yet fully united with the Catholic church?

John everybody has a Guardian Angel no matter what. Ever read the book of Tobias? Its a wonderful story about how the angels care for us.

Talk to your Angel. You'll feel the warmth and comfort. Your Angel will delight at your acknowledgment.

I love my Guardian Angel so much.

My confirmation name is Angela and I'm deeply devoted to the Angels.

This thread reminds me of a question my daughter posed recently that I couldn't really answer.

We were talking about the time she was nearly hit by a car in a parking lot, and I remarked that her guardian angel was really on his toes then.  She asked me, "Where was Ethan's guardian angel when he was hit by a car?"  Ethan is the little brother of my son's friend who was hit by a car, and despite some pretty bad injuries made a quick and full recovery.

I immediately thought of those credit card ads where the angel is distracted while his charge has an accident, but then he catches the credit card dilemma in time.

So how do you teach a child about guardian angels, yet acknowledge that sometimes accidents happen?

The Guardian Angel is there to protect us from threats to our soul, not our bodies.  How they protect us is a mystery.  I believe that sometimes they give us messages about physical threats, but sometimes we're preoccupied and not listening.

The RCCNet article Vee12 cited includes the following:

The guardian angel simply has one task that has many facets — to lead the human to the Passion and Cross. Embracing the cross is the only way human beings reach heaven. He does this mainly through pricking our conscience so we can follow the will of God. He encourages us to thank God for the many humiliations we receive daily, even when his voice is being drowned out because the fallen one is helping to stir up our pride and roars in our ears. Guardian angels do this indirectly working through the imagination and memory. A secondary role is to physically protect. We might notice this indirectly. For instance, we might not be able to locate an item, which then detains us. Only later do we learn that we would have likely been in danger had we not been detained.

So the physical protection offered by the angel is subtle at best and easily overlooked.  If we are not highly attuned to our prayer lives, it is much easier to ignore the messages.

So how do you teach a child?  Perhaps you say that our guardian angels warn us, but sometimes we don't listen.  Little children often don't hear their parents' warnings and admonitions.  You could draw a similarity to a time that you told her not to do something and she did it anyway, and got hurt or got in trouble for it.

Thank you, Rick!

She should certainly understand that about not heeding a warning.  All three of them were punished today for not doing as told yesterday!
