I am considering making a rosary - since I'm not in a position to buy one - and was wonderint if anyone could explain the difference between a one-decade and a five-decade rosary?

Hi,
After you take Br. Carlo up on his offer, here is a good informative web site:

I knew the part about it being longer. And thanks, Br-Carlo, but there are sites that'll send me one for free. I can't have it sent until I'm at school - my parents would freak if it arrived at our house. All the instructions for praying the rosary have been for a 5-decade rosary. I was wondering if there was any difference for a 1-decade rosary in the prayers?

They also have Rosary rings. One of our RCIA team members has one and when we get to the instructional element that includes the Rosary and we teach praying it, while the rest of us are fumbling around out pockets to find ours, he just pulls off his ring and he is ready.

There are two parts to the rosary, in my mind: the prayers (as in the words you say, the Our Fathers and Hail Marys) and the mysteries (which are meditated on). There are four sets of mysteries, with five in each set, and you're supposed to, when praying the five decade rosary, meditate on one mystery each decade. My thought on the one decade rosaries is that you would either only do one mystery or you would go around it five times. Go for the fived decade rosaries, they're the ones usually used.
I love the rosary. ;-) Honestly, PM or facebook me if you have any questions about the rosary. It's wonderful.
And I totally sympathize with your not wanting to have one at your parents' home...I managed to hide my rosary for two months, and then my mother saw it...but we won't go there.

The single decade is just smaller. To say a five-decade rosary, you go around five times. There are also rosary rings and rosary cards. And if you want to learn to make your own, http://www.fnt-victory.net/rosary.html has info on making your own included knotted cord rosaries. Who could object to you getting a ball of twine in the mail?

Thanks, Rick. I thought as much, but I wanted to be sure. I'm something of a craft-person, so I have thread, twine, beads, etc., in my personal stockpile. Only thing I don't have is a cross for the end - though I have made them from copper wire before. I have a set of rose-shaped beads for the Ave's, though.

There is also a website called http://www.rosaryshop.com that shows you how to put together a rosary. There is a section for rosary kits and you can select what type of beads and fittings and it shows you what it will look like. BettyBooptoo showed it to us awhile back. You don't have to order anything but you can see a closeup of how one is put together.
BTW, we sure are sending a lot of closet catholics back to school this fall!

Hey, I just realized how well the term "closet Catholic" truly works for me. I turned my dresser in my closet and rigged up a blanket and made myself a room, 3' by 5'. I had my Catholic books, my rosary, my pictures of Jesus and Mary (and the Saints, though I covered their pictures with a curtain to make doubly sure no one would see) were all in there. I was sort of forced to take it down a week ago, but I had it up for several months. Yeah, in my closet.

Haha, closet Catholic. Good times, good times.
I was very much a closet Catholic before I became Catholic. Sneaking off to go to Mass, hiding books and medals and rosaries in my room. Yes, good times.

I got the rosary made - I think it's correct. I've attached a diagram for corrections if I've really messed it up (Rick?). 10 Ave beads, 1 connector, 1 Our Father, and a cross - did I miss anything?

I've been a closet Catholic as well. Although I'm slowly coming out of that closet. While I don't hide my Catholic books and literature, I do hide my rosaries. For some reason, rosaries make many Fundamentalist Protestants go bolistic. Honestly, I always thought, even in my anti-Catholic days, that they were very attractive.

The knotted-cord rosary does not need a cross for the end. The instructions show you how to tie one. The rosaries are particularly good for the bed-bound because there are no hard parts if they should drop them in bed or fall asleep on them.
While you can tie a plastic cross on the end of you like, it can be made totally from nylon twine. Nylon is necessary so the ends can be "sealed" and will not become frayed. The basic rosary uses #8 fishing cord available anywhere, but the web site I gave you has some unique and interesting colors you won't normally find in a fishing store. And they will custom-make colors for you, which is a particularly good project for a school using school colors. It's a good middle-school or high-school craft project.

That's a beautiful rosary you have made. I made a single decade one out of beads I got at Wally Mart. there are 8 mm light blue beads, ten of them, separated by smaller dark blue spacer beads. The cross is from a package of cross charms they also sell there. I used that waxed cord. I have it on my desk hutch at work so when I go out for a walk at lunchtime I can pray properly instead of just counting my fingers.

You missed the Our Father and three Hail Mary beads at the beginning, but that's OK. Just say those prayers on the large bead you have right after the cross.

| I have seen commercially available single decade rosaries with only one bead above the crucifix, I guess in keeping with the space-saving theme.

One other question: I understand it is common to get a rosary blessed. Could someone explain what the ceremony would be and what it means?

I have taken mine to the church office and asked if Father was available. He took me into his office and prayed over my rosary and that was it. Also, I have asked hime after Mass to bless some things for me and he does it right there in the church foyer. It is simple, short and gives me a good feeling to have it done.

I started making Rosaries this last spring using parts purchased from Lewis & Company http://www.rosaryparts.com along with some parts from Hobby Lobby. I find it very relaxing and enjoyable. Have fun!
