What is an acceptable way to dispose of the old palms?  I'm gonna guess burning them ????  But want to make sure.  Please advise.

TIA,
Ali

since no-one with more experience/knowledge has answered I'll jump in.  After Mass yesterday, my cradle-Catholic friend told me that she always tucked her palm branches behind her wall crucifix, and that if I didn't keep mine, I should burn them and bury the ashes.

Yes, they should be burned and the ashes buried.  That is the proper way to dispose of any sacramental.  If it cannot be burned, it should be buried respectfully.

Wow, I had no idea.  I've received palm branches in Protestant churches and just disposed of them in the trash afterward.  So what makes the palm branches a sacramental?  Has the priest blessed them before they are distributed to the congregation?  Is there a proper way to keep the palm branches before they are burned or buried?  Right now, my palm branches are in my car.

Branches received in a Protestant church are not sacramentals.  Their disposal doesn't matter.

They are blessed as part of the liturgy on Palm Sunday.

As sacramentals they are dedicated to the service of the Lord.  They should be treated respectfully.  When their usefulness is gone, they should be disposed of respectfully, by burning and then burying the ashes.  Sacramentals that cannot be burned should be broken and the pieces buried.  This is to make sure they cannot be used for profane purposes.

Ali, thanks for asking!  I was curious too, as I missed turning mine into the church before Ash Wednesday.

So I'm guessing I need to burn them in such a way that the ashes can be collected.  The grill and the fire pit are out, huh?
