I'm slowly learning how to find stuff in the missal when I'm at Mass, and I know that you can buy a missal.  But it's quite confusing, since you have to flip pages all the time.  Is there anything online that has everything that pertains to that day's Mass (other than the songs) and can be printed out in 2-3 pages? And as far as I can tell, there are parts of the Mass at the church I've been attending that aren't in the missal.  I'm thinking particularly of one response that's sung in Latin (near the end of Mass).  How can I figure out what parts I'm missing and where to find them so I can learn them? Help!

Marcee

Hi Marcee,

Many in my parish, I among them, love to bring a copy of a monthly publication of the liturgy to church with us.  It's called "Magnificat."  Each month's issue is about 400 pages, but it's only about 1/2" thick.  For each day, there is the liturgy for the Morning Prayer, the Mass, and Evening Prayer, as well as a devotion and a short history of a saint.  In the center of the book/magazine is "The Order of Mass" so you could follow along there with a little flipping back and forth as needed.  Much of it is in both English and Latin, too.  There is more stuff in each issue, as well.  I love it!

As far as the responses, some are in the Magnificat, some aren't, but with time and repetition, you finally get them memorized.  I still have to read the Nicene Creed, though, as it's recited.  I went to an Episcopal Church as a kid and then to a Lutheran Church for several years and the "ruts" of those particular forms of the Creed are deep in my mind.  I keep wondering how long I'll have to recite the Catholic form before I'll finally get it!

I believe that the folks at Magnificat will send you one for free to look at.  I think I did that.  I loved it right away!   Their website is http://www.magnificat.com

"slowly" is the key word here!  It just takes time to learn it all, but as Jill says, you can mark the pages in the Magnificat and flip through it a little faster.  I always use the music bulletin to mark the day's mass, and a little prayer card for the creed, and maybe the Gloria.  It will come to you eventually.  When you finally do know how to say it without flipping pages, it will mean more because you can put all your thought into what you're saying, and not what page it is! ;)

Thanks, Jill, for the great suggestion.  I'll get a Magnificat ASAP.  Hmmm, I wonder if it will help me figure out what's going on when I go to Mass in Mexico and everything is in Spanish?

It comes in Spanish, too!  I've seen single copies, in both English and Spanish, at a Catholic Bookstore.

Are you going for fun, for missions???

Well don't do what I did ...

I'm doing a theology degree ... we were doing Church History, the Councils, the Fathers ... it's my favourite subject, I can't get enough of it ... I read everything I can get my hands on, constantly ... so I study the development of the creed backwards and forwards ...

So when we stand up to say the Creed at Mass, I start tripping over myself!

I've been saying this for 50 years, and now I've gone and confused myself ... I mean I know it, but there are nuances of translation, and little differences ... (like 'of one substance with/consubstantial)

So I play safe, and follow my missal ... And if you haven't got a missal, mumble!
(no, ignore that last bit)

Thomas
