I have a question I went to confession today we have a visiting priest because my priest is out of town. When I went into the confessional I made my confess and Father spoke to me. He did not give me a chance to do an act of contrition he went ahead and gave me absolution without the act of contrition. Would my confession still be valid?
Yes, Jesse, it would be valid. The priest determined that you were contrite without actually saying the act of contrition. If you’re like me, you probably already told God in prayer before you entered the confessional that you were sorry. My regular confessor never has me say the act of contrition. The necessary thing is the contrition, not the saying of the prayer. And if you feel you need to say it anyway, you can add it afterwards. God will listen, even if the priest doesn’t.
