| I thought I had read that the minister is supposed to hold the cup for the communicant, but this may have been what I am remembering from my days as a Lutheran. Is it correct to actually take the cup from the minister, drink, and then hand it back??

I was trained to pass the cup to the person and be ready to take it back when they are finished or if you see a possible accident coming. I am especially careful when I am serving the elderly or infirmed but one must be alert and focused at all times.

It is correct to "take and drink", as long as one is taking the cup from a minister who was given it by the priest. It is not permitted to take the cup from the altar or a table.
As a minister, I usually maintain contact with the cup for the elderly and infirm, for children, and for those who act like they're drinking koolaid. As a communicant, I bow my head, say "Amen", take the cup with both hands and drink a sip, and then let the minister take it back from me. I try to treat it like the most precious liquid on earth, which of course it is.
