Explain to me, please, in very simple terms (with no outside links) what the difference is. I have it all jumbled up in my brain right now and am not making very much sense out of any of it.

Limbo: A state of existence in which unbaptized children and others not responsible for their own acts (mentally handicapped, etc.) experience eternal joy but outside the presence of God. The hallmark is that residents of Limbo have no personal sin, but only the stain of original sin. Those in Limbo will not enter heaven until the final judgment. Not Catholic doctrine, but commonly taught for centuries.
Purgatory: A state of existence in which final preparations are made for sinners to be purified to enter heaven. They will enter heaven when their personal purification is complete or at the final judgment, whichever comes first. Catholic doctrine.
Simple enough?
