I often think about how connected we are to our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world, and how at any given moment there is a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass being offered somewhere!
The other day I was thinking how awesome it is that Jesus is truly present in the tabernacles of all the Catholic Churches in the world, and that many churches have more than one tabernacle and also some have seperate chapels for perpetual adoration.
Then I remembered hearing about the military chaplaincy where priests are on active duty in the military throughout the world, and most of our naval ships have a priest on board and a tabernacle!
Just think about how much Jesus is truly present everywhere!
Does anybody know how many Catholic Churches there are in the world?

217,616 as of 2005, according to statistics published by a research agency at Georgetown University. You can see the whole collection of data here.

Thank you, Rick. I didn't know where to find that info.
What saddens me about these statistics is the number of parishes who don't have a resident priest pastor (52,509), and the percentage of Catholics who actually attend Mass (41%).
It's encouraging to know that the percentage of Catholics isn't really dwindling, though, -- it's pretty consistent with the population increase.
How awesome to know that there are, at minimum, over 217,000 tabernacles in the world!

We also have to keep in mind that this includes mission countries and countries such as China where the Church is supressed and people cannot exercise their faith openly.
