I tried to look up, "What is a Canon Lawyer? How are they trained? What is their function?" The definition I found was that they are Canonist. So, I looked up Canonist and what did I get for a definition? They are Cannon Lawyers.
Which leads me here. Somebody .... HELP!!!! What is a Canon Lawyer? How are they trained? What is their function?

Crif, if you weren't way out there on the West Coast, I would invite you to our Bible Study tomorrow evening. A local expert in canon law (certified from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.) is planning to be present for our discussion of Galatians 5.
Click here to see the program of studies.

Quite simply, a canon lawyer is a person trained in Church (i.e., "canon") law in the way a civil attorney is trained in civil law. They attend a licensed program at a place like Catholic University or in Rome, and must pass certification in order to gain a license. Each diocese has a priest who is a canon lawyer with the title of Judicial Vicar, and his function is to advise the bishop in matters dealing with canon law.
One of the roles of the Judicial Vicar is to advise the Tribunal in matters dealing with Declarations of Nullity and other matters that might come before the Tribunal, such as clerical trials.
Like the Bar Association, canon lawyers in the United States belong to the Canon Law Society of America, which publishes an edition of canon law containing commentary.
Dr. Edwin Peters is a lay canon lawyer who has a web site which has a lot of information about canon law including links to the CIC in several languages.
