Last night in our Bible Study group seven fairly intelligent Catholic persons were struggling to satisfy themselves and each other with definitions and differentiations between faith and hope (Catholic teaching).
I had Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary in my lap (always sit around with a dictionary in my lap, don't you know?). Much as I respect Fr. Hardon, I found the entries for faith and hope very inadequate for our purposes.
I really don't want (and won't be able to use in the Bible Study) a terribly long treatise on this, but if you could give me one or two solid paragraphs (tops), I would be grateful.
One gentleman believed hope had to precede faith.
Another gentleman maintained that without faith, there could be no hope.
What say the noble moderators and other Forum scholars?

By the way, guys, (uh, gentlemen) thanks for the info on Biblia Clerus.
The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible and the Navarre weren't very helpful on Galatians 5:12.
(not that the literal meaning was unclear)
Through Biblia Clerus I found (and shared with the Bible Study group) commentary by Chrysostum.
Very cool indeed!
You're great about keeping us informed on the latest good stuff, and I am grateful.

Greetings from Biloxi,
I just read Spe Salvi (In hope we are saved) by Pope Benedict XVI. The second paragraph is titled "Faith is Hope". This is an awesome encyclical letter that is available on either the Vatican website (http://www.vatican.va) or ETWN (http://www.ewtn.com). Perhaps you will find the answer to your question in this document.
In Christ We Are One
Love

I often pray for people who are in the hospital, and part of what I pray for is that they will have hope that they will get better, hope that whatever they are going through will not last, is temporary. Having hope will give them an extra measure of strength to hang on and fight the illness. Hope is a question.
If I pray for someone to have faith, it would be for them to know that God is with them whatever happens. Whether they recover or not, God loves them and will give them the spiritual strength to rest in His loving will. Faith is knowing.
IMHO!

Hebrews 11:1 -- Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
I've always really liked this verse from my teen years. For me it defines Faith.
The Bible I memorized it from says it like this -- Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, though not yet beheld.
I have Faith, therefore I have hope of the future and what God has in store for me.
