I apologize because I feel kind of silly asking this question...

Some people have claimed that the unanimous consent of Church Fathers and 3 different popes taught geocentrism and denied other cosmologies. They claim that the papal statements make use of "ordinary magisterium" so they are authoritative, though not infallible. (as far as I know no ecumenical councils proclaimed geocentrism).

They also say that this IS a matter of faith and morals because it involves the interpretation of Scripture and the Catholic belief that we should not deviate from the unanimous consent of the Fathers.

So...once again forgive me...but how do I prove it isn't a mortal sin to believe in the cosmology of a rotating earth? I mean..if i'm going against the consensus of the Fathers, the ordinary magisterium, and possibly Scripture doesn't that condemn me?

Also, how does this extend to evolution and young earth vs old earth?

Thank you for your time.

Hello again Stephen. You always have an interesting question to offer.

Geocentrism is not an article of faith because it pertains to a question of scientific fact, not the revelation of God. Therefore, no matter what popes, Fathers of the Church or other churchmen may have said about things observed or cause and effect, those words have no bearing whatsoever on the faith.

It is a matter of abuse that people interpret such things as geocentrism, a flat earth (supported by pillars, no less! See Job 9:5; 1 Samuel 2:8; Psalm 75:3), evolution, the age of the earth and suchlike things from scripture; this is not what scripture is about, because it is not what divine revelation is about. Divine revelation is about God and man, good and evil, sin and redemption, trial and reward. We need to leave science to the scientists, and reserve revelation to the Church.

David
