Thanks Bill

Ask them if they have a picture of their spouse/kids/parents in their wallet.  If so, they must love that picture, right?  Not the people the picture represents, but the picture itself.

If they say the picture simply reminds them of the people they love, say BINGO!  The statues remind us of the heroes of our faith in the same way that the statue of Andrew Jackson in Jackson Square in New Orleans reminds us of the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, or that the Washington Monument in D.C. reminds us of our first president.

We pray with what God gave us, whether it be time, talent, or treasure.  A musician prays through his music, and an artist prays through his art.  Whether it is a painting or a statue, it is the artist's prayer.  When we pray before a statue, we join our prayer with the artist's.  Jesus says whenever two or more gather in his name he is present, so when we unite our prayer with the artist's, we are "gathering in his name".  Why do so many complain about statues but seldom about paintings or music?  They are all art.

Humans are sensual people.  Sights and sounds and tastes and smells help us to focus.  That statue can help us to focus on the example of the hero it represents.  We certainly do not worship the statue (or the saint for that matter) but we display the statue as a means of honoring a person of heroic virtue, and a reminder that God calls us to practice heroic virtue as well.
