Hello:
Forgive me if this has already been discussed on this forum, I couldn't find it.
At Bible study recently, the question of the time differences of the hours surrounding the Passion of Christ as related in the Synoptics versus John's Gospel came up. (See second question below) This quite naturally led to a discussion of the timing of the Passover Meal. Mark, Matthew and Luke put it on Thursday night, while John indiates it is Friday. John 18:28: "... It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passoveer." (NAB) And then again, John 19:31 indicates that since it was preparation day for a special Sabbath that began at sundown, they did not want the bodies to be left on the crosses.
Did Jesus just celebrate the Passover meal early since it was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread? Answers will be appreciated.
Now, second question: The Gospel of Mark (Ch. 15) is very precise. *First hour begins at sunrise (6:00 AM.) *V. 25, "it was the third hour when the crucified him" (9:00 AM) *V. 33 "about noon darkness came over he whole land until the ninth hour" (3:00 PM) * V 34 "At the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice." *V. 37 "Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed His last." Jesus was on the cross six hours.
John 19:14 - John says that at noon Jesus was sentenced to death; the time the priests began to slaughter the lambs for the Passover meals. (notes rom NAB Study Bible)
How would you answer these questions? And you thought you would be able to relax today and not do any hard thinking !!!
Thanks in advance,

On the first question, I will defer to the Holy Father. This happened to be the subject of his Holy Thursday homily this year. You'll find a report at Zenit.
On the second question, I can't give an authoritative answer, but I might call to your attention the fact that no one was wearing a watch, and the gospels were written decades after the fact. It's also possible that time may have been reckoned differently by the Romans, Jews, and Greeks, so that the same moment may have been indicated by different descriptions.

There have been several such discussions, James. Here is one of them. I actually like Henry’s work and am only playing devil’s advocate in that thread, so don’t read too much into the back-and-forth.
