Hello everybody,
In my spare time when I'm not taking care of family business, giving people gray hairs on the Forum, not to mention my wife a few! -- I'm also a nativity creche builder, of the indoor variety. It's a lot warmer and easier on both hands and feet. Brrrrrrr Ohhhhhh yesssssss!
My problem is that while I'm pretty at building structures, I'm not as good at making people. God only gave me so much to work with for now. Besides most buyers usually have their own already.
Still, I'll get an occasional buyer, like a brother of mine who said "Hey, where are your people." Since he's a professor, I had a ready answer for him.
"Unfortunately, if I made the people, they'd look like they were designed during a faculty departmental meeting." He didn't bother me after that and still bought a creche.
Nevertheless, I'm always looking for ways to "improve" my "basic people skills." One of them is trolling for basic shapes from which I can copy and/or glue on to a form of masonite that I'll use as a regular template from which to draw my cutting shapes on regular pine. Not kidding when I say really "basic people skills"!
I've checked in with Ask.com and unfortunately it seemed like it had a ton of generic, cutesy and semi-secular shapes, outlines, etc. I'm not writing about that level of "basic." Are there any sites where I can find free-use downloadable art shapes from which I can then take some "inspiration" and make something presentable?
Whenever I see a ".com" that instantly tells me there's either schlock or the company wants to clean my clock. No thanks. I only want to create some very inexpensive figures for these creches as a free customer service, but one that's also dignified.
Any suggestions? They will be greatly appreciated
Many thanks! Steven

| Try a different search engine, it can vary the results dramatically. So tell me more about the creches you build. I have been shopping for a new creche for 2 years. The ones I have found are either too breakable, outrageously expensive or too cartoonish...and why does everyone think the baby Jesus should be part of the manger!

Becky,
THanks for your reply. I'll be better able to give you a far more intelligent run down about the creches I build tomorrow. I'm running low on (sleep...almost to the "fumes" point if that's a "good analogy" ) I'll prob. even have som pics to look at.
In the meantime, yes, I'm going to scrounge around the engines and see what I can pick up here and there.
Catch ya tomorrow.

| Steven, I would recommend checking your local library for the crafts section. They may have books for woodworking that have just the thing you need. Are you planning to carve 3 dimensional figures? Or 2 dimensional cutouts? Around Advent there are children's creches in paper doll form, I have seen in the bookstores, etc. You could trace the outline and cut them out, but you might have to do some painting for the features. If it's too difficult I'd tell the customers you only make the creche, not the Holy Family. And then offer them a great looking handmade creche!

| Try WoodcraftPlans.com. They have a scrollsaw nativity that looks like what you are looking for.
