Anybody ever heard Polish composer Henryck Górecki's Symphony No. 3, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs"?  It includes voice.  The recording I have is with American soprano Dawn Upshaw.

Apparently, this particular recording sold a million copies back in the '90s ... unheard of for a classical work.  And Górecki was relatively unknown at the time [he's still alive].  That must be one of the things I missed with young kids in the house during those years.

Some of the lyrics were taken from words etched on a Gestapo prison cell-block wall.  Here's a translation of the lyrics:  http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~felluga/goreckilyrics.html

This isn't for everyone.  It moves very slowly ... but somehow the 50+ minutes of the three movements goes by quickly [for me].  I've read reviews that say it drags incessantly, and others who say they can't listen without being moved to tears.  Maybe it's the Polish in me, for I'm in the latter camp.

Note that in the late '70s Górecki, a Catholic, resigned his position as a music professor in protest against the government's refusal to allow Pope John Paul II to visit the city:  http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Henryk-G%C3%B3recki

It's amazing now to think that JPII, as pope, couldn't visit his own country at that time.  And that was less than 30 years ago.

From what I have heard (which is most of it) this is beautiful music.
Another nice find I have stumbled upon is Cherubini's Requiem Mass in C minor. I got recruited to sing bass in it on All Souls Day. Beethoven particularly liked this piece.

Alos, I strongly recommend the works of Arvo Part another modern savred writer who's works are very very at times slow and blissfull.
