Great List Dave,

They're swarming like bees all over UMass/Amherst where a lot of them are coming to use the Mullins Convocation Ctr (basketball/hockey arena) every weekend this summer as they have been for the past 9 years.

These guys must be preaching some kind of wealth, if not just health "gospel" because I've never seen so many brand spankin' new SUVs at any home UM game. A lot of them come up from NY. All dressed to the nines on the "weekend best" driving the best gas guzzlers and/or foreign specials. Unbelievable.

The only thing they don't have i$ a guy named Crefalo Dollar to finish off the image. :D

Dave:

One of the first things I did when I left the Witnesses was buy a dinky two door sports car.  Hubby and I each had one, mine was white, his was red.  We loved those cars ;-)

Minivans, large vans, station wagons -- we had 'em all during the JW years.

Two door vehicles were from the debil (not really -- but they were greatly discouraged).

Hubby and I just recently bought a couple of four door sedans, though.  Have to have something to use to transport the grandchildren.

But driving vans and wearing high heels and pantyhose while walking on dirt roads in August or sitting in the sun in large stadiums -- those memories I would just as soon forget!!

Those were the days... NOT!

Pax,

Ruth

All because of the door-to-door work? We have a van simply because we have four kids. :D

Yup, mostly because of the door-to-door work.

Witnesses are not encouraged to have large families.  The end is acomin', you know!!  In the 1930s, Watchtower literature advised people to wait to have children until after Armageddon.   I'm glad my parents didn't follow that advice.

But, yeah, whenever my Dad got a vehicle, it was always with a view to being able to cram in as many people as possible to go invade neighborhoods with the Watchtower.  My husband and I just continued the tradition.

:embarrassed:

On a more serious note, you might ask a Witness sometime why they accept the command given to Noah regarding not eating the blood of animals (due to its antiquity) but ignore the command given to ADAM AND EVE to "be fruitful and multiply".  Witnesses who attend the Gilead Missionary School to be Witness missionaries are mostly couples.  They only accept couples who have been married for at least two years with no children.  Then, if the couple later has children, their status changes and they are not missionaries any longer.

So obviously the use of artifical contraceptives is at least passively encouraged.

Witnesses stand firm against abortion in their teaching, but most of them have absolutely no idea that oral contraceptives can act in an abortifactant manner.  I certainly didn't understand that, and I read every dot and tittle that they wrote up until about 1995.

Making up your own rules is always full of traps...

Pax,

Ruth

Ruth:

When I left the World Headquarters of JWs in order to get married, I requested information on different forms of birth control.  I got a packet from I believe it was the Service Dept. with all kinds of information about different types of birth control.

There is a poster over at our Ex-JW threaded discussion board that gives some interesting information on the JWs and their approval of birth control as well.  Here is the link:

Hi All:

I know that at times when people are dialoging with JWs that it helps to have some photocopies of older Watchtower literature.  If you are in need of some older Watchtower literature, I now have access to a fairly extensive library and I am willing to have scans made and emailed to you.  To access this service, please visit the following link:

One of the most unusual assignments I was (almost) given was an idea floated by a (now deceased) former competitor and good friend (later editor) who thought it'd be fun to accompany a JW as he or she "made the rounds" and to find out what it's like to get doors slammed in their face.

I told her it reminded me of my mother story of when she was growing up in Holyoke, MA where so many Irish lived in the tenements ("flats") and nobody, absolutely nobody left their main doors unopened during the hot days. (Good old days, right. Trust, remember that?). And the front door to the apartment unit wasn't locked up like so many today are, even for rat and fire traps.

She told me you ALWAYS knew when the JW's came around."Bam, bam, bam... went the doors."  What were these people expecting: in that part of Holyoke, it was almost entirely pure Catholic. And none of the other few Protestants, Jews or Orthodox were in the least interested, either.

As another Catholic (albeit Gallic, not Gaelic variety) from MA, but now making a hefty living in the Crescent City would put it "BAM!" :roflmho:
