Jesus came for the sick, not the well. You admit that you're sick in sin. Now go to Him! He came for YOU, Mark!

Jesus Fixed it all in one night, there are always bumps on the road, if everyoen was perfect there would be no point of Jesus deing.

Again, I may be overdamatizing here, I did blow it, but it could've been so much worse, especially in light of how I acted in the past on stage. Went to a group reconciliation service last night, think I'm getting back on track.

Sorry, Mark, but I was worried about you. Guess I get a bit dramatic when I worry. heh

That's great news! Please keep us up on how you're doing. You've been in my prayers, dude.

Well, you could always post a poll and we could vote on a name for you lol.  Seriously, I'll say a prayer that you choose the right saint.

God bless,

Mark,

Let me make a suggestion: St. Patrick (not only because today is his traditional feast day).  A while ago I read a book called "How the Irish Saved Civilization" and was blown away by the biography of St. Patrick (the "real" St. Patrick).

Here are a couple of biographies to get you going:

http://www.americancatholic.org/Messenger/Mar1997/feature1.asp
http://www.cin.org/users/james/files/patrick.htm

If you can, get ahold of Thomas Cahil's "How the Irish Saved Civilization":

I admire Patrick's humility:

"I, Patrick, the sinner, unlearned as everybody knows, avow that I have been established a bishop in Ireland. Most assuredly I believe that I have received from God what I am. And so I dwell in the midst of barbarous heaths, a stranger and an exile for the love of God" (Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus 1 [A.D. 452]).

And, his incredible spirituality:

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

Thanks so much for this prayer from St. Patrick, Mark.  I'd always seen the Christ in Me portion in prayers and hymns, but have never seen the entire prayer.  Thank you so much for this insight into a great saint.  Wow...whatta saint.

Rich,

There is a beautiful legend that goes along with the Lorica or "Deer's Cry" prayer. It is said that St. Patrick and 20 of his followers were enroute to meet King Laoghaire. His enemies, the druids, had set a trap and were lying in wait for him. As Patrick and his companions journeyed they recited this prayer. The story says that as they passed through the point of ambush, all the druids observed was a doe followed by 20 fawns. St. Patrick and his followers were saved!

I was thinking of St. Thomas since it's my middle name, Patrick was the name of my godfather, St. Augustine has some appeal, I don't know.

The purpose of choosing a confirmation saint is to gain a new patron, and to recognize yourself as a new creation as Abram became Abraham, Simon became Peter, Saul became Paul, and Joseph became Pope Benedict XVI.  Thomas is already who you are, and St. Thomas is already your patron.  Thomas is not a good choice.

However, I think Augustine would be an excellent choice for you.  Like you he struggled early in his life with carnal desires but also like you, he had the potential to become a great spiritual leader for the Church, so much so that he is honored even today as one of the greatest theologians who ever lived.

Take the name Augustine, but take it as a challenge.  Frankly you are not likely to live up to his example (as I cannot live up to my Confirmation patron, Paul), but between him and his mother, St. Monica, you will have some of the most powerful prayer partners in heaven to help you with your struggles.

Mark,

I just started reading this thread, so I'm playing "catch up" a little here ...

I have to admit that I'm on the verge of tears. Going from reading your story and seeing you wonder if God or the Church wants you to grace and acceptance within a handful of paragraphs on a web page like this just kind of hits me over the head. God really is good.

I know that many years ago I went from being a "strong" Christian to trying to find relief from the pain of my life in atheism. I figured that if there wasn't a God, there wasn't anyone to be angry at anymore. Not believing in anything felt really good for awhile, but it was delusional and didn't solve any problems. When I started to come to grips with my faith again, I felt so deeply ashamed. And yet ... and yet ... he understood my problems, forgave me, took me back, and led me to the Catholic Church. It's all grace, bro.

St. Peter denied Christ three times, even though he was the first of the apostles to recognize who Jesus really was. If Peter can rise up from the dust after such an awful experience, then we can have hope too.

As for the Devil and rock music ... an early Christian rock guy, Larry Norman, once said that the Devil isn't in rock n' roll records - he's in Neil Diamond records, and he's trying to get OUT!

Peace,

= M

Ok, turned in the paperwork and went w/St. Augustine, not only because of the reasons Rick gave, but it should please the Protestants as well! :dude:

They know, they just choose to overlook it, much in the same way they overlook some of the things they don't like about Calvin and Luther.

Went to confession and adoration tonight, God and His Church are good! :praying:

Mark, I was pleased that you chose St. Augustine. He's become very important to me since I discovered his treatise The Good of Widowhood.

It's wonderful that you have made Adoration part of your life now.
I don't think I could get through the rough times without it.

Hope you'll share a picture of your confirmation with us.

Grace and peace,
Becky

You have my prayers, Mark.

This is a glorious day. Wish we could have a web cam in heaven tonight, one including audio.

And Isaiah 56, my personal favorite, especially when read with the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch:
1 Thus says the LORD,  “Preserve justice and do righteousness,  For My salvation is about to come  And My righteousness to be revealed.
2 “How blessed is the man who does this,  And the son of man who takes hold of it;  Who keeps from profaning the sabbath,  And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
3 Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say,  “The LORD will surely separate me from His people.”  Nor let the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”
4 For thus says the LORD,  “To the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths,  And choose what pleases Me,  And hold fast My covenant,
5 To them I will give in My house and within My walls a memorial,  And a name better than that of sons and daughters;  I will give them an everlasting name which will not be cut off.
6 “Also the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,  To minister to Him, and to love the name of the LORD,  To be His servants, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath  And holds fast My covenant;
7 Even those I will bring to My holy mountain  And make them joyful in My house of prayer.  Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar;  For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
8 The Lord GOD, who gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares,  “Yet others I will gather to them, to those already gathered.”

This might actually be a proof scripture for JW's who teach that only 120,000 will go to heaven.  The "other sheep" are those whose hope it is to to live on the perfect paradise earth.

Your confirmation is on its fifth page of posts, making it one of the most popular topics we've ever had.  You gotta expect some drift!
