Hi everyone. I am looking for a guy. Not for adulterous purposes, mind you.
I don't deal well with confrontation. At all. Neither does my husband. He is a sensitive, bookish type. Which I find irresistable, but not terribly practical. The compressor went out on our air conditioner. The warantee from the store is expired but the factory warantee is still good but we have to go to one of their dealers. So we took it to their dealer and he said the compressor is bad and we should take it to the store where we got it. We did and they said they couldn't help and we had to send a note from the dealer to the company that said the compressor was beyond repair. The dealer won't say that since "anything can be repaired". So I asked him for an estimate. And he is avoiding us. We have $0 in checking $0 in savings, no air conditioner and a baby.
My husband told me to call the air conditioning guy today and argue with him. I am uncomfortable and I think arguing with dishonest people who cheat the poor is the man's job.
When my dad was alive his best friend was a mechanic. He looked at our cars, knew which companies we should go with and did minor house repairs for an apple pie or a six pack of beer. We now live far away from him.
We need a guy. Who's in charge of that? St. Joseph? St. Michael the Archangel?
Help!

Dear GoodSoil,
As a recent U.S. President used to say, "I feel your pain." Only he was lying, I really mean it.
I've been where you are, most of us have. The only advice I can give you is not to give up, keep after them. They are hoping you will just go away.
In the meantime, you might try contacting the company directly and relate your problem to them.
Does your local TV station have one of those "On your side" trouble shooters? Try that. Compnanies hate to get a call from a local TV station and that might spur them to action.
God Bless,

God Bless,
Good suggestion James. We have a very good "7 On Your Side" troubleshooters on our local Channel 7 here in the Bay Area that strikes fear in the hearts of business who respond badly to their customers. Good Soil, document what you have and find one of those in your area. The Better Business Bureau should also be notified if you are unhappy too.

Don't forget a call to the manufacturer. Most of them have web sites and 800 numbers. Dealers who fail to service their customers tend to lose the right to sell and/or service their equipment.

| Hi Goodsoil, Is this a central AC unit? Did you actually drain the refrigerant (which might be illegal), dissassembled the compressor from the coil and 220 VAC wiring and take it to the store for inspection? Or did you just take the warranty paper work to the store? Or is this a window AC and you took it back to the dealer? If it is a window AC they generally are not worth the trouble of fixing as you can buy a new one (China made) for about $125 if you look around. Keep Cool. God bless you.

Thanks Ted. It is a window unit and we did call the manufacturer. They said we have to take it to one of their authorized dealers in our area or no dice. They gave us the name of the guy we took it to. He told me what you did, that it would be easier just to replace it and we should take it to the store. Our warantee at the store ran out so we had to use the manuf. warantee and in order for the manufacturer to honor their warantee their specified repairman had to say the compressor was beyond repair. So we called and asked him to write "beyond repair" on the envoice and he said he wouldn't because "nothing is beyond repair-that's how the manufacturer gets out of it." So I called and asked him how much the repairs would be thinking if I told the manu. how much they would just replace it. Or the authorized repairman is, according to the warantee, supposed to do the work and bill the manufacturer. But he won't give us an estimate. He doesn't want to do the work. And the manufacturer won't reimburse anyone other than their dealers, so the warantee is pretty much toilet paper. And we are broke. We don't even have $125 if we want to have a window to put the AC in, so that's why we had a warantee.
I am going to have to call the BBB and the news I guess.

| Don't stop at customer relations- just politely but firmly keep asking for a supervisor then that person's boss if by the second level you haven't been given satisfaction ask for the nameand contact info of the president of the company- you won't get that person's name or maybe you will but in 99% of the cases their personal assistant 's job is to smooth over issues that are too petty to bug the president of the company with- they usually do whatever it takes to solve the problem to your satisfaction. It takes time and persistence but can be done!

| Thanks Kim. The guy owns his own business. It's in a cinder-block garage that needs paint and the grass isn't mowed and his name is on posterboard in the windows. I didn't have a good feeling when I went there, but I grew up in a small town where there were reliable people who just didn't want to pay the overhead for a nice storefront, and we had something of a disaster in one part of town recently so I was hoping it was a relocation issue. There is no one above this guy. But I am sure going to tell the manufacturer he won't do the work.

Okay that may be the funniest prayer request I've heard in a while. I'm sure any of the above would be glad to help you. What my dad did for stuff like that was contact the government or some other official agency, like he might call the Better Business Bureau and/or whoever licenses those people or regulates them. That's how we got our house before the construction company went bankrupt.
Of course there are also certain spiritual powers who might be very willing to help. Direct you in the right direction or bop the right people up-side the head.
I'll be praying for you. This is no time of the year to be without a/c. Well except here in PA we've been enjoying rare nice weather. I'll pray some of that comes your way, in the meantime.

Hi friends! Hubby called the manufacturer AGAIN and they said air conditioner guy was supposed to call them, not us, and that they would call and ride him until he did something and not 10 minutes later he called and we picked up our estimate. Thanks for your prayers and advice and just being someone I could talk to this about! Go Lord! Go Mom! Go St. Jude, St. Michael and your staff! As my little baby says: "Yay!!!!"
