Hard Verses: Violent Retribution & Anachronistic Customs in Scripture, Genesis 34 and 1 Corinthians 11

Marcus Grodi | October 15, 2015 One Comment

How does the violence of the Old Testament “mesh” with the peaceful teachings of Jesus? Is it a sin for Christian women to attend church without a head covering?

As a Protestant pastor, Marcus Grodi assigned one of three labels to Bible verses: “Clear, Cloudy, Cyclonic.” Cyclonic verses were the “hard verses” to interpret. Marcus Grodi looks at a violent event in the Old Testament and an example of a now seemingly outmoded and largely abandoned custom regarding head coverings found in the New. What are we as Christians to make of such apparent anachronisms? Is the decision about whether and how to apply such Scriptures a matter for individual interpretation or not? We’ll explore this today on Deep in Scripture!

Scripture verses: Genesis 34 and 1 Corinthians 11 (also 1 Timothy 3:14-15)
