Dr. Peter Huff: Former Southern Baptist

Dr. Peter Huff grew up in Atlanta, Georgia in the faith tradition and culture of the Southern Baptist Convention.  He and his family were very active participants in the life and ministries of the local congregation.  Interested in music and art history at a young age, Dr. Huff was privileged to travel with his father to Rome and Greece during his 8th grade year.   “Something clicked”, he said, when he saw the magnificence and the civilization of the Catholic world in Rome and he wanted to be part of it.  It would be many years before that became a reality for Dr. Huff, but the seeds had been planted.  Instead he went to college, then to a Southern Baptist seminary in Louisville, as he explored the call to ministry.  Ironically, it was while he was there that those seeds of Catholicism began to take root.  In time, Dr. Huff would realize that he had an interest in academic life, so he enrolled in religious studies at Indiana University, where he was to meet his wife-to-be.  During that time that he converted to the Catholic Church.  Dr. Huff then went on to the Catholic institution St. Louis University where he received his doctorate in historical theology.  Today Dr. Huff serves as Director of John Paul II Center for University Ministry, and Professor of Theology at the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND.
